In honor of Sierra Leone’s Independence Day yesterday. Here are some fun facts about Sierra Leone:
1. Name Origin: “Sierra Leone” means “Lion Mountains,” named by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra in the 15th century.
2. Language: While English is the official language, Krio (a blend of English and African languages) is the most widely spoken and understood across different ethnic groups.
3. Home of the Cotton Tree: The historic Cotton Tree in the capital, Freetown, is a national symbol and is believed to be over 200 years old. Freed slaves gathered there to pray upon arrival.
4. Birthplace of Freed Slaves: Freetown was founded in 1787 by formerly enslaved African Americans, West Indians, and freed Africans who returned from Britain and North America.
5. Biodiversity Hotspot: Sierra Leone is rich in wildlife — it’s home to rare species like the pygmy hippopotamus and over 600 bird species.
6. Stunning Beaches: The country boasts some of West Africa’s most beautiful beaches, like River Number Two Beach and Tokeh Beach.
