February 2nd is more than a date on the calendar in Salvador — it is a day of faith, memory, and deep affection. On this day, the city turns to the sea to honor Iemanjá, mother of the waters, protector, and listener of prayers. In Rio Vermelho, offerings of flowers, perfumes, and wishes are carried to the ocean, expressing gratitude, hope, and longing. The celebration weaves together African ancestry, popular devotion, and everyday life, reminding us that the sea is not only nature, but kin. To love Salvador is also to trust the waters, to celebrate together, and to recognize Iemanjá as a living presence in the emotional and cultural heart of the city. 🌊🤍

While Brazil officially declared independence on September 7, 1822, the struggle wasn’t over everywhere. In Bahia, Portuguese troops refused to accept the break from Portugal, and the people had to fight for over a year to truly secure Brazil’s freedom. On July 2, 1823, after intense battles and popular resistance led by Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous, and working-class fighters, the Portuguese were finally expelled from Salvador. That’s why many Brazilians — especially Bahians — see July 2 as the real Independence Day: the day Brazil’s independence was won, not just declared.
