Precautions During Extremely Low Temperatures
Dear Customer,
As you are probably aware we are going to have extremely low temperatures this week:
With the extreme cold front moving through our area, we want to ensure your home remains safe and your plumbing stays intact. Rapidly dropping temperatures can put significant stress on your pipes, leading to bursts and costly water damage.
To protect your property over the next few days, we strongly recommend taking the following precautions immediately:
1. Let the Faucets Drip
Allow a very thin trickle of water (both hot and cold) to run at night from your faucets. This constant movement of water, even a small amount, helps prevent the water from freezing solid and relieves pressure within the system. Focus on faucets located on exterior walls.
2. Manage Your Thermostats
Keep it Consistent: Maintain the same temperature on your thermostat during both day and night. While it might be tempting to lower the heat at night to save on bills, a drop in indoor temperature can be enough to allow pipes in wall cavities to freeze.
Set a Minimum: We recommend keeping your thermostat set to at least 65°F (18°C) until the cold snap passes.
3. Open Cabinet Doors
Keep kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet doors open to allow warmer air from the room to circulate around the plumbing.
4. Keep the Garage Door Closed
If you have water supply lines located in the garage, keep the garage door closed as much as possible to retain heat.
5. Water Heaters in Closets
If you have water heaters located in closets, its a good idea to leave closet doors open to the heated space.
6. Basement
If your home has a basement or crawl space and there are louvered foundation vents, we highly recommend closing them during the cold spell.
Stay warm and stay safe.
Best regards,
Art Laureti
