All That Philly Jazz

All That Philly Jazz All That Philly Jazz is a placed-based public history project. We are mapping and contextualizing Philadelphia’s jazz history from bebop to hip-hop.

All That Philly Jazz is a place-based public history project at the intersection of art, public policy and cultural heritage preservation. The points of interest include jazz venues and landmarks, Walk of Fame plaques, and other cultural assets. Most of the physical structures have been erased. Jazz spots fell victim to the 1964 race riot, urban renewal and gentrification. As a result, the history

largely resides in the memories of those who were there. So to preserve the history for current and future generations, All That Philly Jazz is crowdsourced. Community members are invited to share their stories, photos, etc., of the jazz scene back in the day. We are breathing life into legendary clubs like the Showboat, Pep’s, Downbeat, Blue Note, Aqua Lounge, Geno’s Empty Foxhole, Red Rooster, and joints along Ridge Avenue, 52nd Street, aka “The Strip,” and Columbia Avenue, aka the "Golden Strip." All That Philly Jazz is about cultural heritage. We are developing a template for cultural heritage preservation. To get involved, contact us at phillyjazzapp[@]gmail.com.

Secretarial Order 3431 asked the public to snitch on the National Park Service. Between June 4, 2025 and January 14, 2026, the Park Service received over 35,000 public comments, including 186 comments about Independence National Historical Park. The comments overwhelmingly praise Park Rangers and criticize the Secretary of the Interior and President Trump for attempting to whitewash history.

These are two of my favorite comments about the President’s House Site.

Even by the standards of a music that prizes individuality, he stood out, as both a musician and a personality.

While fewer than half of the people who registered for my free walking tour of people, places and events in Hercules Posey’s Philadelphia showed up, I am excited by the possibilities to breathe new life into the story of President George Washington’s enslaved chief cook.

The tour stops included the site of High Street Market where Hercules shopped for the presidential household. One of the participants told us about a proposed project that will connect the block where the market was located with Independence National Historical Park. Stay tuned.

After the walking tour, I stopped by the American Philosophical Society’s community day held in Jefferson Garden where I hope to hold the dedication ceremony for Moses Williams’ historical marker in October. While there, I created a tricorn in honor of Hercules.

I circled back to the President’s House. Hercules knew Richard Allen, founder of Mother Bethel AME Church, who owned a chimney sweep company. President Washington was one of his customers. I was reminded that Richard Allen was also a cobbler. He made shoes for Ona Judge. I now wonder whether he made the boots for Hercules that President Washington complained were too expensive. 🤔

History matters. To encourage the next generation of culture keepers, we have to take the stories out of the archives.

I woke up this morning with Hercules Posey, President George Washington’s enslaved chief cook, on my mind. Today is the 214th anniversary of his death. An article published in today’s PhillyVoice provides an overview of my efforts to preserve Hercules’ story in public memory.

My walking tour, Walking in Hercules Posey’s Footsteps, is “sold out.” The event is free so there will be no-shows. If you’re interested, it’s not too late to join us at the President’s House Site, 6th and Market Streets, on Saturday, May 16th at 10:00am.

If you see barricades around the President’s House Site, don’t be alarmed. Judge Rufe has been notified that “starting May 11, the National Park Service plans to conduct cleaning and maintenance work at the President’s House Site.” The work is expected to be completed on May 22.

That said, the timing is suspect. Barricades might be up during Avenging The Ancestors Coalition’s May 21 rally commemorating Ona Judge.
