Well, we were supposed to be in St. John’s, Newfoundland for an overnight on the 19th and 20th,, but the captain had to cancel the stop due to weather. So, we ended up with an overnight in Halifax, Nova Scotia yesterday and today for our last stop before getting back to Boston. We had been here a few times before, so we jut basically wandered about. We did take a tour of the Alexander Kieth Brewery, which was quite interesting, offering several tastings and performances of some old local folk songs. We did climb the hill up to the Citadel and strolled the boardwalk with its many shops and restaurants. We also enjoyed a dinner out at a fine local restaurant, Water Polo, with our friend Bill. Now we have one more day on board to enjoy the ship’s amenities and pack before our arrival in Boston on Saturday.

We reached our final stop in Greenland in the village of Qaqortoq. It started out a bit foggy, so we decided to wait until late morning to make our way out. When we tendered to land, it was still a bit foggy, so we climbed the streets to the top of the mountainside. When we got to the top, the fog broke and we were treated to some amazing views of the area. We wandered around town and saw the fur shop, museum, fountain, and church. We then went through the souvenir shop and ended up in the local cafe for a cold beer and a taste of Reindeer (yes, we ate Rudolph). We certainly picked a perfect time to stop in as a local trio was putting on an interesting Greenlandic music show, absolutely fabulous!

After leaving Iceland, we are heading back to Greenland for one more stop. Today we spent the day cruising Princess Christian Sund once more. Today was bright and sunny, so the sights were a little more vibrant on this direction.

Grundarfjordur, Iceland was on our agenda for today. This is a very tiny village, like many we’ve encountered on this trip. So, we decided to take a ship excursion to the charming villages of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The drive around the peninsula offered views waterfalls, volcanic landscape, and a glacier. Our first stop offered seaside vistas of nesting birds. The next stop had views of a lighthouse and 2 rocks representing Christians and Pagans.

Our last stop was supposed to be the largest waterfall in the area, but a surprised was in store for us instead. There was a one lane bridge on the gravel lane to the parking lot for the falls, but our bus didn’t quite make it. The bus almost flipped over the bridge and we had to make an emergency exit. Thankfully, from our precarious perch, everyone got off the bus with all of their belongings. We had to wait out in the cold weather for over an hour until a new bus was sent to pick us up and send us back to the ship. It was quite an interesting supplement to our excursion.

For the past 2 days, we’ve been in Reykjavík, Iceland. The first day was a bit rainy and cool and we had the day to wander the city and take in the sites. The second day was sunny and we took a third party tour of the Grand Circle, Keric Volcanic Center, and the Blue Lagoon.

On day one, we took the ship shuttle to Harpa Concert Hall and set out from there. Our first stop was at the Northern Lights Center for some interesting exhibits on the phenomenon. We then made our way through the touristy shopping and entertainment area to City Hall before coming to Hallgrimskirkja, the church at the heart of the city. After stopping at a local pub, we continued on to Rainbow Street, the Sun Voyager Sculpture, and the Phallological Museum before enjoying some local fresh fish and brews for dinner. It was then time to go back to the ship to get ready for our next long day in Reykjavík.

Day 2 was an absolutely perfect sunny day four our Golden Circle tour. The first stop of the day was at Thingvellir National Park to marvel at the fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Next, it was on to the Geysir Park to check out the geothermal area and admire the various steam vents and the main geyser that erupts every 7 minutes; we also had a delicious salmon sandwich and cold local beer while there. After lunch, we made a visit to the amazing Golfoss waterfall and admires the power of the melting glacial ice. Following the falls, we had a stop at the Kerid Volcanic Crater to check out the lake formed at the center of the crater of this dormant volcano. Our last site for the day was the breathtaking Blue Lagoon. What a soothing and relaxing way to end a long day (2 days).

Djupivogur, Iceland, a village of 500 people, was our port of anchorage today. We decided to take a nature walk excursion offered by the ship. Once we tendered to the port, we assembled for the tour, which offered individual transmitters so that we could all easily hear our guide while waking around. The hike led us to some interesting sights and the guide offered a fantastic explanation of the history of the area.

When the tour was over, we had some free time and wandered into to an outdoor exhibit of the Eggs of Merry Bay, which showed the size and shape of the various creatures which have called this their home over many years. We also entered a silo-like structure which has excellent acoustics and were treated to a local singing performance. Before heading back to the ship, we had to stop at the local brewery for a sampling of their fine brews.

Belfast, Northern Ireland was our port of call for today. Since we had been here before and visited the Giant’s Causeway, we opted to take the ship shuttle to downtown Belfast and explore the city on our own. We got dropped off at City Hall to admire the immediate area.

We then made our way to St. Anne’s Cathedral, Albert Memorial Clock Tower, Linen House Library, and St. George’s Market while taking in the sites along the way. We started to get a bit hungry and thirsty, so we took time to find some authentic Irish pubs. Our first find was The Crown Liquor Saloon for a quick
stop, then we settled in at The Deer’s Head for some local fare and a couple of pints. It was then time to catch the shuttle back
to the ship to end our wonderful day in Belfast.

Greenock, Scotland was the port where we docked today. This town seemed vibrant and full of sights, but we opted to take the train into the city of Glasgow.

Glasgow is a bustling, vibrant city. We got off the train and strolled through the Merchant City area with shops and restaurants and took in the sights of George Square before making our way up the hill to Glasgow Cathedral. When we got to the cathedral, a wedding was in progress with bagpipe players and fancy cars. We were able to go inside to admire the cathedral, but not to the section where the wedding was ongoing. Next to the cathedral was the Glasgow Necropolis, which held hundreds of old crypts and offered stunning views over the city.

Next, we came back into the central city area for some Scottish fare and a couple of cold pints of local beer at Sloan’s, the oldest pub in Glasgow. After lunch, we walked up and down Buchanan Street, the shopping district. Glasgow, unlike American cities, offers expansive pedestrian areas to meander without traffic. After our stroll, it was time to catch the train back to Greenock and board the ship.

Today we anchored in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland for a visit to Dublin. The tenders to the port were running quite slowly, so we weren’t able to get to the dock until after 11:00 and then we had to catch a train into the city. Thankfully, we had been to Dublin before and were able to explore the area quite extensively at that time. We did make the best of our short visit today and were able to visit the Guiness Storehouse and Temple Bar, two of our favorite places to enjoy a couple pints of Guiness. We also caught some of the main sights of the city as we made our way around before having to catch the train back to the port. This is a port that really does require an overnight stay to fully enjoy.

Rotterdam. Netherlands was our port of call for the day. We started the day with a bike tour through the main area of the city. We had great views of the waterfront, parks, museums, and shops. Throughout the tour, we had three stops to sample local chocolates, cheeses, fried fish, and raw herring (which really wasn’t too bad). After our bike trek, we had plenty of time to explore the city at a slower pace and, of course, enjoyed some local beer.

This morning, the captain maneuvered us deep into the Norwegian fjords, where we docked in the charming village of Eidfjord, Norway. We embarked on a tour with Viator to explore the best of the region. Our first stop was at the Hardangervidda Nature Center, where we saw a wonderful panoramic movie that showed the vast beauty of the nature in the area. There were also some interesting exhibits and a lovely gift shop and cafe.

Next, we stopped at the stunning Voringsfossen waterfall. Mark and I were the only ones from the bus that hiked all the way down to the base of the falls and were treated to some breathtaking views. Our final stop on tour was at a picturesque bridge overlook. We then had some time to stroll around and met up with ship
friends for a local beer at a neighborhood cafe.

Today we docked in Akureyri, Iceland. When we were here before we visited waterfalls and geothermal areas, so this time we decided to stroll around the second largest “city” in Iceland. We had a very enjoyable day just wandering the downtown and waterfront areas. We did try to find a hiking trail, but were unsuccessful in finding it. While trying to do so, we did actually get quite the hike in. We saw the local church, synagogue, and commuter center and enjoyed a casual lunch and local beer in a very locals-oriented restaurant.
