Kharisma Richardson should have been blowing out birthday candles.
Instead, March 26, 2016, became the day her young life came to a heartbreaking end.
Authorities say the 4-year-old Kalamazoo, Michigan girl endured unimaginable abuse at the hands of the one person who was supposed to protect her most—her own mother.
Investigators say Kharisma was repeatedly beaten, forced into scalding bathwater that caused severe third-degree burns, and left alone in her bedroom for hours after the abuse. By the time help was called, it was too late.
An autopsy determined she died from blunt force trauma and the devastating burns she suffered.
After a three-month investigation, her mother, Daveeta Lee Walker, was arrested and later convicted of first-degree murder, child abuse, and torture.
In November 2016, a judge sentenced Walker to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 50 to 70 years. The judge called it the worst trial she had ever presided over.
Following Kharisma’s death, three other children were removed from the home by Child Protective Services. The case also prompted an investigation into CPS’s handling of prior reports and warning signs. While technical violations were identified, investigators concluded those errors would not have changed the outcome.
No child should ever know this kind of pain.
No 4-year-old should spend their birthday fighting for their life.
