Great news! The annual blimp battle was held above Acrisure Stadium as is the custom before every season. Once again the Free Tours blimp heroically had its way with the hated Ravens blimp sending it crashing down into the Allegheny river. Congratulations are in order to our fearless crew and to the 62,000+ fans on hand to cheer us on.

Our walking tour goes by Kaufman's every day. I have never seen it as depicted below. Partly that is because the picture below is not actual footage. But it does depict a real event. In the 1880s Kaufman's ran a promotion in which on November 30th at 6:15 they threw packages of clothing down to the streets. 150 suits, 1200 pairs of pants, 800 overcoats and similar number of caps and hats. 15,000 people attended the clothing shower. People fought over the packages and the police were called in fearing a riot.

I have seen two possible years reported for this event, 1883 and 1886. The large Kaufman's building was finished in 1886 as depicted in the image below. Also, the clothes were thrown out a window and not off the roof..

We had a great tour today with folks from The Priory hotel. The Priory is a 42-room historic boutique hotel on the North Shore. The Priory and the St. Mary's church (both now part of the hotel) were almost destroyed to build I-279. They had been purchased by the state. Yet when the state tried to take St. Boniface nearby the church fought back and won. The planned route was altered saving both churches. What a blessing! Today we have St. Boniface and the wonderful Priory hotel!

Late August 1803 saw Meriwether Lewis waiting for his 55-foot keelboat to be completed. His expedition almost didn't happen. Lewis's air gun discharged accidentally and as recorded in his journal:

"the ball passed through the hat of a woman about 40 yards distant cutting her temple about a fourth of the diameter of the ball; she fell instantly and the blood gusing from her temple. We were all in the greatest consternation supposed she was dead but in a minute she revived to our enespressable satisfaction."

The air gun incident occured on Brunot island just downstream from the point. We can point it out to you on our tour. Lewis departed the next day on August 31st, 1803. And the rest is history!
