Sailing Vega - Get Set Sail

Sailing Vega - Get Set Sail Mark & Amy Garland. We said goodbye to our home in the mountains of VA & are now living aboard our sailboat! Daily updates on Instagram!

He dreamed of sailing and she loved to travel – so we decided to go cruising! We are selling out our land-based lives to live on a sailboat. And we’ve created GetSetSail so that you can too! Follow along as we document our progress, from planning and financing to technical training and tips.

And we’re off! Taking Vega up to Deltaville today. We had to do a little rental car shuffling yesterday to make it all work out but it’s nice to know we can just relax and enjoy the trip.

Naked Boat! Bimini & dodger are off. Sails are off. Our day has been all about reducing windage for Vega. Dorian might only be a Cat 2 IF it arrives here but we aren’t taking any chances. Everything is ship shape!
Stay safe everyone! ⛵️❤️

4 Dolphins came for a ride with sv Vega today. Its so magical to watch them swim and catch a little boost from us.
I took a dozen photos but eventually just watched in amazement as their bodies dance in the waves.
This area of North Carolina is filled with gorgeous sea life. Last year we had a visit from a big ol’ sea turtle 🐢 right after we anchored in Cape Lookout. I’m hoping he comes back to see us again tomorrow.

Yes! We are back sailing in the ocean. ⛵️ woke up a little early to make today’s passage to our favorite spot along the coast - Cape Lookout 😍.
70 nm scheduled for today, I hope it all goes as smoothly as it’s been so far.

98° and all the humidity 🔥
We may not have A.C. but our awnings are keeping our boat cooler than most think. There’s a nice breeze through the hatches and a fan running down below, it’s not too bad. But we are ready to untie the dock lines and enjoy the breeze of being on anchor!
Amy made net hatch covers to work with our Breeze Bandits so we can enjoy them at night without being eaten alive ! 💨

Digby (our tender) is back in the water.
We waiting until the sun was setting and the air cooled off🔥 but if our neighbors hadn’t just seen an alligator, I’d have jumped in. 💦
Next is to put the sails back on! (And hope the mast isn’t full of 🐝 mud dauber nests.) 🧐

Cleaning up Vega & heading back out on the water tomorrow. A little mud dauber kept trying to build his nest in our Danbouy this spring, guess it kept slipping because it’s solid mud!
Sorry little dude, we’re putting the Danbouy back in and moving on. Bye bye 👋🏻 Finally!

2018 - Thank you for a fantastic year! Excited to get back to Vega and return to the adventure!
From sailing in Florida to sunsets in Maine, catching up with old friends and meeting so many new ones, it was a year for the books 💕💫

We are so grateful to be back on the water. Honestly though, it was really difficult to return after such a wonderful visit home to see family and friends. But now we are back on the water and not in a boatyard; we travel all day and set our anchor just before sunset. Everything just seems to flow.
We are still traveling inside on the ICW for now, hoping for better winds and slightly warmer weather (it’s in the 30s most nights and our heat broke the last day in the boatyard). Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 that Tuesday brings the weather window we are waiting for, just after this next storm blows through. ❄️💨

Refinishing the hatch and cockpit table was a lot easier with shore power!
