Booking the cruise is only one part of planning a Virgin Voyages vacation.

The full trip matters.

Flights matter.
Hotels matter.
Transfers matter.
Return flight timing matters.
Travel protection matters.
Port strategy matters.
The day before embarkation matters.

At CamJon Travel, we specialize in Virgin Voyages, and we help our sailors think through the full vacation, not just the cruise fare.

That includes when to fly in, when to fly home, whether MIA or FLL makes more sense, how to treat San Juan, why Europe needs more breathing room, and when a post-cruise hotel night is the smarter move.

The best Virgin Voyages vacation is not just the one with the best ship, cabin, or itinerary.

It is the one that starts smoothly, ends calmly, and gives you enough breathing room to enjoy the journey.

The May CamJon Travel newsletter is here, and this one is a big update.

CamJon Travel is evolving.

Not because we are trying to become bigger for the sake of being bigger. Because the sailor experience should feel clearer, more connected, and better supported from the moment you start planning.

This month’s update covers:

✨ The next chapter of CamJon Travel
✨ How CJ Travel Connect is becoming the home base for existing CamJon sailors
✨ Why sailors with a past, current, or future booking with us should sign up
✨ Dining planning inside CJ Travel Connect
✨ Dominic, our Sailor Experience Manager
✨ A few Virgin Voyages tips that can make the planning feel smoother

CJ Travel Connect has also shifted in an important way. For now, it is focused on our existing CamJon sailors. That includes anyone with a past, current, or future booking with us.

The goal is simple: keep your CamJon Travel relationship more organized, more connected, and easier to access as your sailor journey continues.

Travel insurance does not prevent flight delays.

It does not stop weather.

It does not make your bag magically appear.

It does not guarantee your airline behaves.

But it can help protect your investment and provide support when covered situations occur.

That is why travel protection belongs in the same conversation as flights, hotels, transfers, and cruise timing.

If you are investing in a Virgin Voyages vacation, do not wait until the night before departure to think about what happens if something goes sideways.

At CamJon Travel, we personally use and recommend Faye for our own travels.

The hotel night before your cruise is not the annoying extra expense.

It is the thing that helps protect everything else.

Your cruise fare.
Your flights.
Your PTO.
Your dining plans.
Your celebrations.
Your sanity.

A pre-cruise hotel gives you room for airline delays, weather, missed connections, baggage issues, traffic, and the simple fact that travel does not always behave.

For most Virgin Voyages sailings from Miami, San Juan, Los Angeles, and Seattle, we recommend flying in at least one day before.

For Athens and Barcelona, we recommend arriving at least two days before.

CamJon Travel also helps our sailors with hotel strategy in the various ports, because the right hotel depends on your flight time, port, budget, comfort level, luggage, transfers, and travel style.

The goal is not just getting to the ship.

The goal is starting the vacation well.

Everyone plans how to get to the ship.

Not enough people plan how to get home from the ship.

Disembarkation day still has moving parts:

Getting off the ship
Collecting luggage
Port flow
Customs or immigration when applicable
Transfer time
Traffic
Airport check-in
Security
Boarding

A ship’s scheduled arrival time is not the same thing as your airport-ready time.

For Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and San Juan, CamJon Travel generally recommends flights at 1 PM or later.

For Athens, Barcelona, and other European ports, we recommend 2 PM or later at the earliest, but often prefer a post-cruise hotel night if the better U.S.-bound flights leave the next morning.

Ending the vacation calmly matters too.

Europe cruises need a different flight strategy.

For Virgin Voyages sailings from Athens, Barcelona, and other European ports, CamJon Travel recommends arriving at least two days before embarkation.

And for many U.S. travelers, that means booking the flight three calendar days before the cruise.

Why?

Because many flights to Europe are overnight.

If your cruise leaves Saturday, flying out Wednesday night may mean you land Thursday, stay Thursday and Friday night, and board Saturday.

That sounds like three days early on the calendar.

In real life, it is two hotel nights and one very important buffer.

That buffer helps with jet lag, missed connections, delayed luggage, airport congestion, and the simple human need to not board a beautiful Mediterranean cruise looking like you slept inside your suitcase.

For flights home from Europe, we generally recommend 2 PM or later at the earliest.

But because many U.S.-bound flights leave earlier, a post-cruise hotel night is often the smarter move.

Flying to Miami for Virgin Voyages?

You will usually compare two airports:

MIA, Miami International Airport
FLL, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

MIA is usually the simplest option for PortMiami.

FLL can absolutely work, especially when the flight schedule or price is better.

But FLL is farther from PortMiami, so the savings need to be weighed against transfer time, transfer cost, and stress level.

For return flights after a Miami sailing, CamJon Travel generally recommends 1 PM or later from either MIA or FLL.

Earlier flights may work sometimes.

But “may work” is not the same as “smart default.”

Ship clearance, luggage, customs flow, traffic, airport check-in, security, and airline delays all matter.

The goal is not to make your vacation cheaper by $40 and more stressful by 400%.

San Juan deserves its own clarification.

For most Virgin Voyages sailors, San Juan does not need to be treated like Europe.

You generally do not need to fly in two days early unless you want extra time in Puerto Rico, have complicated flights, are traveling during a high-risk period, or simply want more cushion.

But same-day flying is still a no.

San Juan is a one-day-before port.

Not a same-day port.

That means flying in the day before, enjoying Old San Juan, getting a good night of sleep, and waking up already where you need to be.

A nonstop from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, or another direct airport does not change that advice.

One night before is generally enough.

The day of is not the plan.

05/28/2026

A nonstop flight is not a permission slip to fly in the day of your cruise.

Yes, nonstop is better than connecting.

But nonstop flights can still be delayed.
They can still be canceled.
Your aircraft can still arrive late from another city.
Weather can still hit your departure airport.
Bags can still get delayed.
The airline can still change the schedule.

And the ship is not waiting because your airline had a bad morning.

Our CamJon Travel rule is simple:

If you are flying to your Virgin Voyages cruise, arrive at least one day before.

The limited exception is if you live within about three hours of driving distance from the port and can drive directly to the terminal with plenty of margin.

If an airplane is involved, make the hotel night part of the plan.

05/27/2026

Your Virgin Voyages vacation does not start when you step onto the ship.

It starts when you book your flights.

And this is where a lot of sailors accidentally create stress before the trip even begins.

Our new guide breaks down when to fly in, when to fly home, which airports make sense, and how to think through hotels and transfers for:

Miami
San Juan
Los Angeles
Seattle
Athens
Barcelona

The big rule?

If you are flying, do not arrive the day of your cruise.

Not even if it is nonstop.
Not even if it is from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, or another direct airport.
Not even if you have never had a delay before.

For most Virgin Voyages sailings from Miami, San Juan, Los Angeles, and Seattle, we recommend flying in at least one day before embarkation.

For Athens, Barcelona, and other European ports, we recommend arriving at least two days before.

Because the cheapest flight can become the most expensive choice if it puts your vacation at risk.
