You may or may not know that I am a certified mediator. It is a skill that I realize that I have practiced for many years - with varying degrees of success. However over the past two years, through training and then volunteering and serving in a journeyman's capacity to those with more experience than myself I am coming to appreciate all that mediation offers.

My experience of being a mediator is that it is a privileged position - being witness to those in conflict - with others and with themselves. And, it a privilege to help others work through the issues that they face.

Best of all, what I most enjoy about mediation is that it is "future focused". This means that it looks back only to inform how those in conflict got to where they are. When I work with clients I aim to bring them to: And now, what will the future look like with this other person?

In that question there is tremendous potential for defining what a relationship will look like.

I will share more in future posts.

Did you know that under stress we fall back on good AND bad habits. Interesting research here: http://ti.me/15L1Sil.

(UPDATED) Under stress, we all tend to seek comfort — sometimes in not-so-healthy ways — but a new study suggests that challenging experiences are as likely to promote good habits as they are to support bad ones.

Women who are empowered contribute to the greater good. Good article of research that shows the very clear link of better countries' economic performance and their policies that empower women in the marketplace: http://bit.ly/12hfEaT

Governments like to radiate the sense of doing everything they can to promote economic growth. But when it comes to one major opportunity, too often they are lacking. Empowering women has provable economic--never mind moral--benefits. Yet, the policies of countries the world over often don’t reflect...

Those of you who have worked with me know that I advocate taking manageable risks when developing your business. With employees it can be more challenging to encourage risk taking if the employees feel they will be punished for "stepping out". Take a look at this article for some interesting ideas on how you might encourage employees to take intelligent risks.

Growth and innovation come from daring ideas and calculated gambles, but boldness is getting harder to come by at some companies. After years of high unemployment and scarred from rounds of cost-cutting and layoffs, managers say their workers seem to have become allergic to risk.

I find this article to be really good at getting at the essence of what makes women leaders different and effective both in teams and in customer relationships. While being more competitive in the market is a good thing for women leaders to consider, it is also important to remember that women bring things to the table that many men could do well to learn in order to be more effective. Take a look at this article by Don Peppers: http://linkd.in/10vocY0

Several years ago the nature of management’s future was driven home to me in a flash, as I shared the stage with my co-author and business partner Dr. Martha Rogers. It was the heyday of the
