Karnak and Luxor Temple on a Nile cruise: 134 columns in a hall, sphinxes, obelisks, and one temple worth saving for sunset.
Day 11 of Unforgettable Egypt, our 13-day trip with Small Ship Travel, sailing the Nile aboard the Azhar. Karnak's great hypostyle hall holds 134 sandstone columns in 16 rows, and the Avenue of Sphinxes runs 1.7 miles from there to Luxor Temple. Both were quarried at Gebel el-Silsila, the stop we made on day 8 that the big ships sail straight past. We saved Luxor Temple for the evening, when the stone lights up and the carvings read better than they do in daylight.
