A very popular activity in the Rangeley region is bird-watching and we've certainly had a lot of fun with this over the years. "Welllll, who are YOUUUU.....???" is a common comment of mine this time of year with all the migrating birds coming through. Our friends at the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust are hosting their annual Rangeley Birding Festival June 4 - 7 this year. It's a great opportunity to get out with a group, a leader, be shown all the hot spots in the region, and gain a wealth of information about this exciting activity. Here's a schedule of the activities during the event: https://rangeleybirdingfestival.com/2026-rangeley-birding-festival-schedule/ . It's always a popular event so be sure to check into it soon.
We've been very fortunate to see and photograph a variety of birds over the years. Here's a few ours if you'd like to take a look. What you really oughtta do is get here and enjoy them yourself! The Birding Festival would be a great time to do it!

Reese and I took a late afternoon ride out to Mailbox Pool on the Magalloway River to check for early spring wild flowers. Photos from a year again had shown that wild flowers had popped out here at this time last year. Wellllll, not quite this year but evidence they’ll be here soon. A little walk in the woods is never wasted, though!!! We’re fortunate to have this all so readily available!

Here you go…. It’s official! So much chat about ice out yesterday but it’s the Game Warden Service who does the official declaration. Rangeley village end of the lake was very clear yesterday afternoon but we could see lots of ice in the Oquossoc end of the lake; that’s probably why declaration was held until this morning.
Fast Ice Out! Now on to “here fishy, fishy” and all the other lake fun! Hope you can be here soon!

Gorgeous spring day in the RLRofMaine! Have to grab ‘em when we can…. Forecaster is pretty sure we’ve got some interesting weather coming up this next week:

“Say goodbye to the sunshine; you won’t see it for days”
“Ugly, stuck pattern”
“Unfortunate forecast”
“Ugliness headed our way”
“Look how horrible the upcoming week looks”
“Pattern seems to favor May snow”
“Not a pretty look late in the week”
“Wednesday to Thursday will be a soaker”

hahaha… that was a lot with my morning coffee yesterday! ☺️ And all we could really think was - good, we’ve got some good rain coming in! Looking to fill up those lakes and groundwater!
Here’s the tromp with the dogs yesterday and a few other treats for you. Let us know if you have any questions.

We were out today taking some photos for you folks but these are far superior to what we got….nothing like a bird’s eye view! Lake’s still full of ice and we have more cold weather coming in (with some potential May snow…. 🤣) but it’s getting time to start thinking about your fishing trip! Let us know if we can do anything to help!

Soooo fortunate to have allll this available to us so readily in the remarkable Rangeley Lakes Region! Today’s outing was the Magalloway River, another conserved gem of the RLR by (Maibox Pool) and another portion (power plant/Hydro Road) made available by Brookfield. Big thanks, also, to the generations of fishermen who first created these paths/trails along the river in their pursuit of the legendary fisheries of this region. What a fun day! Good and chilly (had to zip up my jacket) and bright sun was appreciated. Last time we were here, we were in high knee deep snow! Come see what we saw. ☺️

No puppies on this walk….
Cascade Stream Gorge is a wonderful asset of our region and fun to visit in all seasons but …there’s VERY steep, very high drop-offs, strong, rushing, very cold water (esp. this time of year) - all in all, a place to be sure to use cautious. Wet rocks are slippery, leaves are slippery, and ice is slippery. And you don’t want to slip here!
It’s only about a 1/4 mile walk to the “big” cascade but lots to see on your way there. We like to check/explore every nook and cranny on our way in because this allows us to double check on our way out anything we might have missed. ☺️
When we got to the big cascade, it was still frozen solid thick ice packs so we made little effort to get to a spot where we could view the falls/cascade better, deciding we’d come back in a week or so to take a look.
As always, wonderful to be out in this remarkable region and ever grateful to for making sure these gems of our region stay open, maintained, and available for all of our enjoyment.
