The issues right now on MV Hondius regarding the Hantavirus outbreak is a terrific example of what you can do to plan ahead!
I think most people would prefer to plan for the worst and hope for the best in all situations. Travel is definitely one of those situations where you should plan ahead because things can quickly go sideways.

When you are traveling do you normally take a few OTC meds with you just in case? Pepto tablets if you eat some food that was too spicy or just didn't agree with your stomach. Tylenol for a headache? Allergy medication if you have seasonal allergies?

How do you reduce your risk of communicable disease (of any kind)? Washing your hands frequently is the #1 way to prevent a lot of illnesses but what can you do to prepare for getting a severe illness while traveling?

Getting a comprehensive travel insurance that includes great coverage for medical and emergency evacuation is the answer. Hopefully you'll never need to use it but it's worth the small dollar amount for that coverage.

What can be done right now while travel prices are high due to fuel prices? Plan ahead 6-12 months and book hotels now. Wait to book airfare until prices come back down.
While fuel prices are high people tend to travel less which means less short term hotel bookings. When there's less hotel demand, hotels lower their prices a little. Lock those prices in now!

A few good things in life are free!

Most agents charge a planning fee for finding airline flights. Not at Sand & Sail Travel. I spent 90 minutes on the phone last night with a guest that needed help finding the perfect flight on a tight budget. We found the flights she needed to go visit family for the July 4th weekend. Sometimes an act of service like this and making someone's travel plans easier is payment enough.
