Are you a helicopter parent? Really think about this one and read on:
I am sending this out to my community of moms and dads because it is clear that we need to make sure our kids get these crucial soft skills before heading off to college. If students and parents are losing tens of thousands of dollars in tuition and flunking out of college because they don't manage their time, lack resiliency, fail to be organized and shrug off responsibility then this should be a big wake up call for us parents to stop rescuing them and start preparing them.
What is even more alarming is that they might enter their adult life and career as unprepared as they went into college. To me, that is very sad. College should be a time to refine these skills so they are confident with who they are. Some of the best people I know are in this generation of kids and they deserve our support and guidance in developing these skills so they don't flounder or flunk out of college.
As the creator of a workshop series called the Countdown To College I am so happy to see in very clear language why we need to let our children develop these soft skills that will bring them success through their college years and beyond!
This is why I am so passionate about my workshops because I know kids entering college need these skills to be successful and most don't have them. For them not to be successful because we are over involved is tragic. We are great parents and love our kids but we need to be careful not to over do it!
Make sure you are teaching your children these types of skills everyday. You will thank me when they are 26 and living on their own in their own confident, self-assured way!
Many parents are driven to do all they can to make their kids' lives as worry free as possible. In the long run, helicopter parents do more harm than good.
