Today we took a drive to St. Germain because we heard about a man who makes incredible hammocks by hand. We had never really explored this little Northwoods town before, and honestly, it felt like one of those places that quietly flies under the radar in Wisconsin.
Before heading up, we called to make sure Shawn was open since it’s still early in the season. When we arrived at The Hammock Hut, Shawn already had several of his handmade hammocks pulled out for us to see. You could immediately tell this wasn’t some tourist shop. This was his craft. His passion.
For more than 20 years, Shawn Hammock (yes that's his name) has been handcrafting fabric hammocks and outdoor accessories right there in St. Germain. But somewhere between the hammocks hanging from the beams and the stories being shared, we realized we weren’t just meeting a craftsman. We were meeting someone special.
Shawn had a heart transplant several years ago and still deals with some of the effects from it. But you would never mistake him for someone defeated. Quite the opposite. He was full of life. Full of gratitude. Full of joy.
The night before we arrived, he had been up until 4:00 in the morning sewing custom co****le bags in his little shop. Not because he had to. Because he loves creating things for people.
His hut itself felt handcrafted and personal, filled with colorful creations hanging proudly from every corner. We went there to buy a hammock. We left with something much more meaningful.
As we drove away, my wife started tearing up.
Because every once in a while, you meet someone who quietly reminds you what really matters. Shawn has faced more challenges than most people ever will, yet he carried more spirit, warmth, and appreciation for life than almost anyone I’ve met.
He asked us to send pictures once the hammock was installed, so we did. He was genuinely excited. In fact, he called me afterward just to talk about it.
That kind of sincerity is rare these days.
Today we met a humble man named Shawn Hammock who makes hammocks in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. But somehow, he also made us slow down and rethink what’s important in life.
What a gift.
If you’re ever near St. Germain, stop by The Hammock Hut. Even if you don’t leave with a hammock, there’s a good chance you’ll leave feeling a little lighter.
