Happy 1st Birthday, Mountain Happenings!

One year ago, Mountain Happenings started with a simple idea: to create a place where neighbors, visitors, businesses, and friends could discover everything happening on and around Lookout Mountain.

Today, we're celebrating our first birthday—and what an incredible year it has been!

From local restaurants and hidden gems to festivals, community events, scenic adventures, and small businesses, we've had the privilege of sharing the stories that make our mountain communities so special. Along the way, we've also reached an exciting milestone of 500 followers on Facebook and Instagram!

Most importantly, we want to say THANK YOU to every person who follows, likes, comments, shares, submits photos, recommends a business, or simply stops by to see what's happening. Your support, engagement, and encouragement have made this first year more successful than we ever imagined.

Mountain Happenings exists because of this amazing community, and we're grateful to be a small part of connecting the people, places, and events that make Lookout Mountain such a wonderful place to call home.

Here's to Year Two—more adventures, more local discoveries, more community connections, and more reasons to celebrate life on and around Lookout Mountain.

BREAKING NEWS: Walnut Street Bridge Reopening Date Announced!

After 18 months of restoration, Chattanooga’s iconic Walnut Street Bridge is ready to welcome visitors back.

The City of Chattanooga has announced that the historic pedestrian bridge will officially reopen on Saturday, October 3.

A community celebration is planned from Noon to 3 p.m. and will feature:
• A ceremonial walk across the bridge
• Live entertainment
• Family-friendly activities
• Plenty of opportunities to experience the newly restored landmark

Since closing in early 2025 for a major restoration project, Chattanooga residents and visitors have eagerly awaited the return of one of the city's most beloved attractions.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on a disease that affects thousands of women and families each year.

Ovarian cancer is often called the “silent disease” because its symptoms can be subtle and easily overlooked. This month helps raise awareness about the warning signs, risk factors, inherited risk, and the urgent need for improved early detection and treatment options.

Throughout September, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition encourages survivors, caregivers, families, advocates, and communities to wear teal, share educational resources, support fundraising efforts, and help spread awareness.

Together, we can increase understanding, support those affected, and work toward a future with better outcomes for all.

And a huge shoutout to a very special Mountain Happenings survivor. You know who you are! These teal toes are for you! Your strength, courage, and resilience inspire us all.

Hello, September!

A new month has arrived, and with it comes some of the best days of the year on and around Lookout Mountain.

The summer heat begins to ease, football returns, leaves will soon start to show hints of color, and local festivals, markets, hikes, and community gatherings fill the calendar.

Whether you're enjoying a mountain sunrise, exploring a favorite trail, supporting a local business, or simply soaking in the beauty of where Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama meet, September is a wonderful reminder of why we call this place home.

Here's to cooler mornings, scenic drives, and making the most of every mountain moment.

Kelli Schwind's Mountain Happenings Koozie is getting quite the workout! This time, Kelli took it to the beautiful Nickajack Cave Wildlife Refuge near New Hope, Tennessee.

If you're looking for a unique local adventure, this is one worth adding to your list.

Nickajack Cave has a fascinating history. It once served as a refuge for Native Americans and later became a hideout for river pirates who preyed on travelers along the Tennessee River. Today, it's best known as home to one of the Southeast's most significant bat colonies.

From late April through early September, thousands of bats emerge from the cave each evening at dusk, creating an unforgettable sight. Visitors can watch from a viewing platform accessed via a scenic boardwalk and trail from the Maple View Recreation Area.

Want a different perspective? The bats can also be viewed from the water by launching a kayak or canoe from Maple View. While you're there, you'll also find a swimming beach, picnic area, pavilion, courtesy dock, and boat ramp.

Please note: The cave is gated to protect the bats, and caving or climbing is not permitted.

Getting There:
Take I-24 to Exit 161 and follow TN-156 West toward New Hope. The cave can be seen across the water on the left.
