Reminder from Montana: if it’s dry, don’t burn.

This is the start of the East Side Fire, which burned roughly 1,300 acres this spring and came far too close to several homes in the Red Lodge area. One windy afternoon and suddenly somebody’s “small burn pile” becomes helicopters, sirens, and neighbors watching smoke columns creep across the hills.

Please:
• Check local burn restrictions
• Don’t leave campfires unattended
• Skip burning on windy days
• Keep water and tools nearby
• Fully drown and stir ashes until they are cold to the touch

Montana is beautiful, but it turns into a tinderbox fast this time of year. Stay safe out there.

🐻 Late-Night Visitors at Kodow Kabin 🐻

At 2:11 this morning, our security camera caught a mama black bear and her two cubs making their way through the property.

They quietly crossed the yard, checked absolutely nothing in, and continued on with their evening plans.

This is one of the things we love about living in Montana. Wildlife isn’t something you only see in a park or a zoo. Sometimes it simply wanders through the yard while everyone else is asleep.

A friendly reminder for anyone visiting bear country:

🐻 Never approach wildlife.
🐻 If you see cubs, mom is nearby.
🐻 Keep food and trash secured.
🐻 Carry bear spray when recreating outdoors.
🐻 Enjoy the experience from a safe distance.

And before anyone asks…

Beartooth Pass is OPEN! ❄️☀️

It may be warm down at the base, but up at the top it’s cool, crisp, and honestly feels like Mother Nature forgot what season she was working on. And really… how often can you say you saw snow walls in June?

The Beartooth Highway is one of those drives everybody should experience at least once. Giant snowbanks, mountain views that look fake, and temperatures that make you want a hoodie in the middle of summer. Montana refuses to behave normally and frankly that’s part of the charm.

If you’re staying at Kodow Kabin, taking a drive over the pass is absolutely worth the trip. Just keep an eye on the weather because the mountain likes to keep people humble.

One of our favorite little details at Kodow Kabin hangs quietly outside Vicki’s Bunkhouse.

This thermometer represents the Igel family, Vicki’s family, whose business has served central Ohio for more than 150 years. Long before vacation rentals, hashtags, and people photographing their coffee for the internet, the Igel family was building a legacy rooted in hard work, craftsmanship, and community.

We’re proud to have a piece of that history here at Kodow Kabin.

Places become special because of the stories tied to them, and this little thermometer carries generations of one.

Well… this morning’s guest was a little oversized. 🫎

Caught this moose strolling right past the front of Kodow Kabin around 7 AM like he owned the place. No reservation, no cleaning fee, no checkout instructions. Typical wildlife behavior.

One of the best parts about staying in Roberts is you never know what you’ll see wandering through town. Between the creek, the quiet streets, and the wide-open Montana mornings, nature tends to make surprise appearances around here.

Thankfully, this visitor kept moving peacefully along and nobody had to explain Airbnb house rules to a 1,000-pound forest giraffe.

Best part?
The security camera labeled him as: “Person Detected.”

Apparently the camera took one look and decided:
“Tall guy. Weird proportions. Probably Steve.”

Technology is doing its best. Barely. 🤎

🚀 Big upgrade at Kodow Kabin… we officially joined the modern world and installed Starlink internet!

Gone are the days of “maybe the Wi-Fi will cooperate if nobody breathes too hard.”
Now guests can enjoy fast, reliable internet with speeds around 100 Mbps. Stream movies, work remotely, scroll endlessly, upload vacation photos, or pretend to answer emails while sitting on the deck with coffee. We won’t judge.

Historic 1865 cabin charm… with internet that no longer behaves like suspicious 1997 dial-up. Nature outside. Actual usable Wi-Fi inside. Civilization is fragile, but we’re doing our part.

Spotted this beauty out wandering the hills near Kodow Kabin like he owns the place… which, let’s be honest, he probably does.

This is the kind of thing you don’t get in the city.
No traffic. No noise. Just wide open country, big skies… and the occasional neighbor with fur.

Don’t worry — wildlife here keeps its distance, and honestly, sightings like this are part of what makes staying out here so unforgettable.
