If you haven’t seen this exhibit at the George Eastman Museum, you have until 9/6 to see it. It is wonderful. I had no idea that Steichen hybridized the Connecticut Yankees delphiniums. So much great garden art and information.

Tucked into South Park is a glass palace that was once one of the largest greenhouses on Earth. 🌿 The conservatory opened in 1900 as the final piece of Frederick Law Olmsted's last major park design, and it was built by the Lord and Burnham Company, the same firm behind some of the era's grandest glasshouses in London.

When it opened, this $130,000 glass structure ranked as the third largest public greenhouse in the entire United States and ninth largest in the world. 🏛️ Beneath its curved glass dome, the Palm Dome still rises today, and one greenhouse quietly holds the largest public collection of ivy anywhere in the country.

More than a century later, the conservatory still stands on its original site, now listed on both the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places. Every season the glasshouse fills with a completely different world of plants, but that same Victorian glass skeleton has sheltered them all since 1900. 🌺
