New info on how you can pay in Japan.

𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗦 - Starting April 1, 2025, Japan is phasing out signature-based credit card verification to enhance payment security—making signing for purchases a thing of the past. English-language signs are already popping up at stores warning travelers: if your credit or debit card is signature-only, it will not be accepted.

Here’s what you need to know before you swipe (or tap):

🔐 Mandatory PIN Entry for Japanese Cards
The Japan Credit Card Association (JCA) now requires PIN authentication for all IC-chip card transactions issued in Japan. This new rule eliminates the option to sign for purchases with domestic cards.

🛂 What About Foreign Credit Cards?
If you’re visiting from abroad, this change mainly applies to Japanese-issued cards. Most foreign-issued cards will still be accepted and may still prompt for a signature. That said, some retailers may still ask for a PIN, or refuse to complete payment if the register prompts for a signature, so it’s a good idea to know yours just in case.

Tips for a Smooth Experience:

• Know Your PIN – In many countries, credit cards don’t require PINs. But in Japan, knowing yours could be essential.

• Carry Cash – Japan is going increasingly cashless, but some shops—especially outside big cities—still prefer cash.

• Check Before You Tap – While tap-to-pay is on the rise, many retailers only accept Japanese-specific services like PayPay. Universal services like Apple Pay and Google Pay may not be supported. If you plan to go contactless, ask ahead to avoid surprises at the register.
