Experience an extraordinary adventure with Blue Dream Wildlife River tours, where you'll witness the enchanting 'Magic Hour' on a Dark Sky tour as daylight seamlessly transitions to sunset and eventually a star-filled sky.

This special opportunity takes place August 13th and 14th on Tahkenitch Lake, a hidden gem located 8 miles north of Reedsport, Oregon. Tahkenitch means ‘lake of many fingers’ and is home to abundant wildlife - Roosevelt elk, pelicans, beaver, bald eagles and much more.

Contact Blue Dream Wildlife tours for more information, and don’t miss the Magic. ❤️

By popular request, we’re now offering crabbing trips. Join us as we drop pots for Dungeness crabs!

In response to requests for fishing, we only offer opportunities to fish for invasive fish species like small mouth bass that threaten the local ecosystem. It's hands-on conservation with a side of adventure—and maybe dinner, too.

There's nothing like wildlife watching on the Blue Dream. You’ll feel inspired, calmed, and deeply connected, not just observing nature but becoming part of it.

Here, the California Brown Pelicans glide over the Bandon Marsh, on their way offshore or to the estuary mouth to feed. There, they plunge head‑first from 10–20 m into the water to scoop fish into their expandable throat pouch. This dive-feeding method is uncommon—only they and the Peruvian pelican do it.

The Great Egrets are now just arriving at the inland rivers like the Umpqua. Despite standing over 3 feet tall and boasting a wingspan of nearly 5 feet, they only weigh 2–3 pounds—thanks to hollow bones and a light frame built for soaring.

Just last week on the South Umpqua, a velvet-antlered buck surprised us mid-river, gliding through the current. Ospreys are watching above with a sharp eye out for fish, bringing meal after meal to their ever-hungry fledglings. These are the moments that remind us what we’re working to protect. Join us in keeping these wild places wild!

This is a great time of year to book a trip because the rivers are in beautiful shape -- both the Umpqua and the Coquille -- and the Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge as well! Don’t miss out -- book now to explore these stunning spots with us!

‘Snowfall in Spring’ The cottonwoods are letting the cotton fly as an adult peregrine falcon watches near by. Cottonwoods are among the fastest-growing trees in North America, thriving near rivers, streams and floodplains. Female cottonwoods release tens of thousands of seeds wrapped in cottony fluff, creating the illusion of summer snow.

The Bandon Marsh always offers an exceptional and serene wildlife viewing opportunity. Rare and spectacular white tailed kite birds hovering, hawks soaring, and sand pipers darting. Welcome back to another beautiful season of wildlife watching in the Umpqua! Here is a rare shot on our first trip out of the season.

Here, we see a magnificent steelhead kelt, meaning a steelhead that has spawned and is headed back to the ocean. On average, less than 5% survive to spawn a second time and a much smaller percent spawn three times in their lifetime.

There’s an interesting study out of OSU showing that steelhead that spawn 2 or 3 times have a much lower reproductive success their first spawning event, suggesting those fish hold some energy back from reproduction in order to devote additional energy to continued survival. This is probably a mechanism of the species to spread risk and increase the overall probability of the species surviving some cataclysmic event.

Thank you fish biologist Chris Allen for this information!

Each spring, the skies welcome back a remarkable traveler - the osprey. After a 5,000 mile journey from South America, these powerful birds return to the same nests and find their same partner each year. Their arrival marks a powerful seasonal rhythm, a sign that nature is renewing itself right before our eyes.

Blue Dream Wildlife Tours has a front row floating seat to observe these magnificent birds.

Captain BlueBird has been receiving guidance from a dark sky tourism expert, a true connoisseur of Oregon's pristine skies. Together, they're crafting a one-of-a-kind "Magic Hour/Dark Skies" tour experience. The tour begins an hour before dusk - the "Magic Hour" - when wildlife shifts and settles down into the calm of the night. Guests then enjoy the breathtaking views of the Milky Way and the sky as it darkens, lasting beyond the final twilight to revel in the beauty of the starlit night.

A big thank you to Travel Oregon for providing the specialist in Dark Sky Tourism, helping to bring this magical stargazing experience to life.

Please always keep our fish, feathered, and furry friends in mind. They are relying on us for their safety and survival as they go about their day.

We hope to see you out on the river this coming season. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call. For reservations, call Robert Hoehne anytime at 541-679-7077.
