The river is in great shape right now, and the birds are returning to their summer homes. So many locals find this a great opportunity to take visiting guests out to experience the local rivers in all their spring splendor, watching otters slip through the current, mink enjoying a fresh meal on a log, and migratory birds filling the trees and skies. And while we enjoy the beauty of the season, we often take the opportunity to help nature by removing trash caught high in the brush and branches, left behind by the spring floods.

And of course, if you're interested, we love sharing the stories of this watershed while floating through it. We bring along our Wildlife Sampler - a collection of information and fascinating facts about many of the animals we encounter -adding an extra layer of discovery and appreciation to our adventure.

This season, we’re expanding to a few new spots along the Oregon coast.

We’ll be offering trips to Tahkenitch Lake during the "magic hour" when evening goes into night, and the Milky Way stretches across the sky. So neat to see the transition among the wildlife. Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is another one of our go-to spots, with tons of wildlife and incredible seasonal movements.

You might even see the White Tailed Kite bird - a soft and almost dove-like raptor that can hover almost perfectly still, which is rare among raptors.

Come along to learn, relax, discover and heal in nature's best.

If you would like some in depth expertise on local wildlife and ecosystems, Matt Hunter is available to accompany you and Capt'n Bluebird on the water or land for half day to multi-day trips. Whether you want to learn more about the birds we encounter or understand the ecology of various wildlife, Matt can help you have some "aha" experiences you will remember!

March 26, 2026 - a young mink. Probably just last year's young. Almost too young to be wary of the quiet movement of our wooden boat drifting by. Born blind and nearly hairless around April, they'll open their eyes in a few weeks and develop their sleek fur. By late summer, they'll look like small adults.

The season for Blue Dream Wildlife Tours and Adventures has begun, and the river is full of life. Many of the creatures are busy nesting, with osprey claiming the prime high spots. However, after returning from South America, some have come back to find geese already settled into their nests, making for some interesting competition this year.

March 26, 2026 -- We’ve already been lucky - on just two trips, we’ve spotted two different mink along separate stretches of the Umpqua River.

Our goal remains the same: to get people out onto the rivers and lakes of Southern Oregon to experience their beauty, and to feel the awe of the life that calls these places home.

The Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge — Invertebrate-laden mudflats providing fuel for thousands of migrating birds. Surrounding the mudflats are salt marshes, intertidal zones, forested wetlands, grasslands and upland forests. It’s a complex mosaic of ecosystems supporting Oregon’s coastal wildlife at its most vibrant.

Exploring on the Blue Dream showcases the wild beauty - a Lion’s Mane Jellyfish floats by, one of the largest jellyfish species known with a bell up to several feet wide, spectacular bird life soars above, and mammals forage and interact in the surrounding waters.

Rains have improved river flows, which triggers the arrival of fall Chinook salmon on their way up the South Umpqua to spawn. Females will dig their redds and attract competing males. Once again, life ends and begins in these waters in a timeless fall ritual.

Join Captain Bluebird for a front row seat to nature’s quiet wonder as the seasons change! It’s a beautiful sight ❤️

September and October are truly the golden months at the Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.

One of the season’s true stars is the brown pelican. Their antics are impossible to miss—swooping low over the water, diving with surprising grace, and gathering in curious, clumsy-looking groups on logs and shoreline rocks. Whether they’re jostling for space or puffing up in the sun, their behavior is endlessly entertaining and offers incredible photo opportunities.

But they’re not alone.

Great egrets glide silently over the mirror-like surface of the water, seals slip by in the late-day sun, and otter make surprise appearances. Lions mange jellyfish and other marine life even sneak into the brackish waters.

With Blue Dream Wildlife Tours, you'll get the chance to get up close—safely and respectfully—to this spectacular seasonal show. Our guide knows just where to go and what to look for, making every outing a unique and unforgettable encounter with nature.

September and October are some of the best months to experience wildlife on our local waters. As the weather cools and the days grow shorter, animals become more active, preparing for the coming winter. Migratory birds stop to rest and feed, fish are more visible in the clear, calm waters, and the stillness of the season enhances every sound and sight. With minimal rain and gentle breezes, the water turns glassy—reflecting the vibrant colors of early autumn and the wildlife that thrives in it. It's a magical window of time in nature.

Here are recent pictures on the Umpqua River in the Roseburg area.

This special opportunity takes place August 13th and 14th on Tahkenitch Lake, a hidden gem located 8 miles north of Reedsport, Oregon. Tahkenitch means ‘lake of many fingers’ and is home to abundant wildlife - Roosevelt elk, pelicans, beaver, bald eagles and much more.

By popular request, we’re now offering crabbing trips. Join us as we drop pots for Dungeness crabs!

In response to requests for fishing, we only offer opportunities to fish for invasive fish species like small mouth bass that threaten the local ecosystem. It's hands-on conservation with a side of adventure—and maybe dinner, too.

There's nothing like wildlife watching on the Blue Dream. You’ll feel inspired, calmed, and deeply connected, not just observing nature but becoming part of it.

Here, the California Brown Pelicans glide over the Bandon Marsh, on their way offshore or to the estuary mouth to feed. There, they plunge head‑first from 10–20 m into the water to scoop fish into their expandable throat pouch. This dive-feeding method is uncommon—only they and the Peruvian pelican do it.

The Great Egrets are now just arriving at the inland rivers like the Umpqua. Despite standing over 3 feet tall and boasting a wingspan of nearly 5 feet, they only weigh 2–3 pounds—thanks to hollow bones and a light frame built for soaring.
