While it might look like we have thousands of wiggly worms underneath the sand, it’s actually evidence of the dune’s constant movement. The only thing constant at White Sands National Park is change!
The dunes at White Sands can move anywhere from a few inches to almost 38 feet in one year depending on the size and shape. Wind shapes and moves the sand all year round. The tiny ripples are almost like miniature dunes on top of the larger ones, with sand being pushed up and falling down continually.
Every time you visit the sand dunes, you’re looking at something slightly new. Have you noticed the sands shifting over time?
