Second half of day 4 was Melk

Instead of taking the ship directly to Melk, we decided to bike the 30 km (19 miles) from Dürnstein to Melk through Austria’s breathtaking Wachau Valley. The ride took us through gorgeous little villages, rolling vineyards, and nonstop views of the Danube River. We even stopped for a little picnic that Avalon Waterways packed us.

Once we arrived in Melk, the food experiences somehow got even better. First, we visited a local bakery where we learned how to make schaumrolle, a traditional puff pastry horn filled with sweet meringue. Then we headed to a local bee farm for a tasting featuring different varieties of honey, honey wines, and even honey vinegar. I never realized how many unique flavors honey could have until today.

Between biking through the countryside, discovering local traditions, and tasting incredible regional specialties, today felt like the perfect way to experience Austria beyond the typical tourist stops.

Stop # 4 brought us to the storybook village of Dürnstein

Our excursion this morning took us to a local saffron farm, where we learned just how much care and precision goes into cultivating one of the world’s most valuable spices. From learning how the flowers are harvested to discovering how to spot fake saffron, it was such a unique and unexpectedly fascinating experience.

And yes… we also got to try saffron chocolate 🍫 which was even better than it sounds.

Although we only spent the morning in Dürnstein, it was one of my favorite stops!

Afternoon stop: Melk

Stop #3 was Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹

Vienna feels like stepping into a living postcard. Our included excursion took us to House of Strauss, where we learned one of Vienna’s most iconic traditions: the waltz. It was such a fun experience getting a glimpse into the city’s musical culture while attempting to gracefully spin around the dance floor.

One thing I’ve really appreciated about traveling with Avalon Waterways is how connected the experience feels to each destination. After exploring Vienna, we headed back to the ship for lunch, where the chefs prepared specialty dishes inspired by the city and country we were visiting. It’s such a cool way to continue experiencing the culture even after returning onboard.

Next Stop: Dürnstein

Today’s stop along the Danube River brought us to the charming city of Bratislava, Slovakia.

We started the morning with Avalon’s included hike up to Bratislava Castle, and the views overlooking the city and the Danube were absolutely worth the climb. After the excursion, we spent the afternoon wandering through the old town streets, exploring hidden streets. Bratislava has such a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

To finish the night, we found an incredible speakeasy called The Half Blind Pig. Great cocktails, intimate atmosphere, and one of those spots you’re glad you stumbled into while going down alleys.
