The “Sistine Chapel of Abruzzo”

From the outside, the Oratory of San Pellegrino in Bominaco does not look like one of Italy’s great painted interiors.

It is a small medieval building in the mountains of Abruzzo, near the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta. No grand façade. No famous city around it. No crowds waiting outside.

But inside, almost every wall is covered with frescoes from 1263.

The paintings cover the vaults, arches, and walls with scenes from the life of Christ, the Passion, the Last Judgment, the life of Saint Pellegrino, saints, symbolic figures, and a medieval calendar showing the months of the year.

This is why the oratory is often called the “Sistine Chapel of Abruzzo.”

The nickname is not about Michelangelo. It is about the effect of the room. You enter a simple building, then suddenly find yourself surrounded by a complete painted cycle that has survived for more than 700 years.

The oratory is in Bominaco, a small village in the municipality of Caporciano, in the province of L’Aquila. It is not on the usual Rome-Florence-Venice route, and that is probably one reason many travelers have never heard of it.

But the frescoes are considered one of the most important medieval painting cycles in Abruzzo.

Tomorrow, June 2nd, Italy celebrates la Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day): one of the most important national holidays of the year.

Every year, Italians mark the occasion with flag displays, public gatherings, and the iconic Frecce Tricolori (Italian Air Force aerobatic display team) painting the sky in green, white, and red. It's one of those moments when the whole country stops and feels unmistakably, proudly Italian.

Buona Festa della Repubblica! 🇮🇹
