The Million Dollar Highway is a historic and scenic section of U.S. Route 550 in southwestern Colorado.
It follows routes once used by miners during Colorado’s silver and gold rushes in the late 1800s.
The road was originally built by Otto Mears, a famous engineer known as the “Pathfinder of the San Juans.”
Construction began to support mining communities in the rugged San Juan Mountains.
The route connected important mining towns such as Ouray and Silverton.
Engineers faced steep cliffs, harsh weather, and difficult mountain terrain while building the road.
The highway was later improved and incorporated into the U.S. highway system.
Its name is linked to legends about high construction costs and valuable ore beneath the roadway.
Over time, it became famous for its dramatic scenery and challenging driving conditions.
Today, the Million Dollar Highway is considered one of the most spectacular and historic drives in the United States.
