Viewers of our TV show will know that the nuns featured are members of the fictionalised Order of St Raymond Nonnatus - hence their residency in Nonnatus House.

Yet although the order has been fictionalised, St Raymond Nonnatus is actually a real saint - none other than the patron saint of midwives!

St Raymond Nonnatus was born in Catalonia, Spain in 1204. His name "non-natus" is from the Latin, meaning "not born" - because accounts say that he was born by Caesarean section, his mother having died while giving birth to him.

For this sombre reason, he was declared patron saint of expectant mothers and midwives. This 1630 painting by Eugenio Caxés shows the newborn Raymond Nonnatus being cared for and fed by angels.
