There’s a particular kind of freedom that you feel setting out on horseback at Hacienda Montezuma.

In 2008, two architects moved to a stretch of remote Panamanian coastline to build a house. Twenty years later, that coastline is a 560-hectare private reserve home to just three estates, Ama Estancia, Casa Loro, and Las Tortugas, surrounded by over 80,000 native trees planted by hand.

We sat down with lead architect Iván Morales to talk about how it all came together: from a lake carved where an old landing strip used to be, to a garden designed before the house that sits inside it, and a courtyard built so every room faces the sea.
