Introductory history. National Geographic has always been a great resource. If you need an introduction to "The Cumberland Road" This is a good one.

The Cumberland Road, also known as the National Road or National Turnpike, was the first road in U.S. history funded by the federal government. It promoted westward expansion, encouraged commerce between the Atlantic colonies and the West, and paved the way for an interstate highway system.

In Ghostbusters II, there were terrible problems because the negative mindset of so many was wreaking havoc with their world (city, etc.)
Perhaps in 2021 it isn't sewers of green slime: it is so much worse, look around. You want a better life, a better world, a better everything. You really do...have to want it.
