Chicken for two roasted in the wood-fired brick oven; warm bread salad with scallions, garlic, bitter greens, dried currants, and pine nuts at Zuni Cafe, San Francisco, CA.

This roasted chicken is a great example of 1) letting the ingredients shine and 2) one’s patience is awarded. Roasted to order, the whole chicken takes over an hour to prepare. The chicken is cut into quarters surrounding a bread salad. The chicken was so juicy and tender, with a crisp skin and just the right amount of seasoning. I appreciated how the pine nuts, currants, greens, and good olive oil brought textural and flavor contrasts to the meat and bread.

Extra (chocolate milk + coffee) at Tono Coffee Project, Japantown, San Jose, CA.

A pop-up coffee shop at an apartment complex, Tono caught my attention while I was on a run with its music. I was then pleasantly surprised by their offerings— coffees from Heart Roasters and Olympia Coffee and chocolates from Marou - Faiseurs de chocolat in Vietnam. After learning their extra drink used Marou - Faiseurs de chocolat as well, I had to try it.

The extra consists of house-made chocolate syrup whisked with an espresso shot and topped with steamed milk. I appreciated the dark chocolate, coffee notes, and latte art, as well as the friendly conversation from Bryan, who operated the storefront that day as a one-man show.

Strawberry Watermelon Cake at Black Star Pastry, Newtown, Sydney, Australia.

This cake was noted as a must-try in Sydney and is quite the unique experience. Billed as the world’s most instagrammed cake, this cake was not a gimmick, but rather a really pleasant and unique blend of textures and flavors.

It consists of layers of almond dacquoise, rose cream, and fresh watermelon that are topped with strawberries, pistachios, and dried rose petals. I appreciated the contrasts between the airy and nutty meringue, sweet and crisp watermelon, and pleasant rose cream.

juices and cold brew, drip coffee and lemonade were offered at the final stop of the R2 Block Party, where folks could see various pre-production R2’s in different colors and hop inside the vehicle. Live music and special guests were also featured over the weekend. Nice to see the excitement for the vehicle as order invitations and deliveries begin.

Honey Ginger Tumeric and Ube Double Scoop (6.75 USD) at Davis Creamery, Davis, CA.

I stumbled upon Davis Creamery on my bike during a day trip to Davis—it had quite a line! They make their ice cream in-house with a variety of flavors rotating each day. Traditional, as well as more creative flavors, are available; chili crisp and sweet corn tamale and jalapeño were amongst the more unconventional flavors available when I visited.

Due to an ongoing dairy shortage with their supplier I didn’t get to sample flavors. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my selections, both of which were quite creamy and rich. The honey ginger turmeric was quite turmeric forward, with a bit of grittiness from the spice powder. The ube was very fragrant and seemed to feature mashed ube/taro, which I appreciated.

Portion sizes are quite generous with a scoop being more like 2 scoops of ice cream! I will be back in the future.

Earlier this year I visited the Tillamook Creamery and joined their Honorary Tillamook Taste Bud, Ice Cream Experience.

Tillamook Creamery is a must visit for those interested in the behind the scenes view of Tillamook's products. During the ice cream experience we learned about Tillamook's production processes and how they approached flavor profiles and quality of ice cream. We also learned about ourselves in terms of our tasting capabilities! We enjoyed freshly cut slices of their ice cream (and during my visit, their outgoing ice cream sandwiches) and left with souvenirs and unique photo opportunities.

Afterward, I visited the dining hall and tried their seasonal fish and chips, where I substituted chips for their fried cheese curds. It was my first time having albacore tuna as the fried fish, but this appears to be a thing on the Oregon coastline! Afterward, I checked out the self-guided factory tour and tried a few samples before leaving fresh cheese curds and some cheddar. After several bouts of un-squeaky cheese curds on the West Coast, I was super glad that these curds were squeaky and tasty!

Make sure to visit early as it gets quite busy later in the day!
