My first stay at a W Hotel — and I’m starting with Boston.

I’m spending a few days at the W Boston, and of course I can’t stay at a hotel without looking at it through my travel advisor eyes. 😊

First impressions: a spacious, contemporary room, a convenient location for exploring Boston, and this morning, breakfast delivered right to the room — definitely my kind of start to the day.

And then there’s the minibar… I don’t think they forgot anything. 😂

One of the reasons I enjoy experiencing different hotels firsthand is that photos and descriptions only tell you so much. Staying there gives me a much better sense of the experience — and, more importantly, which travelers it might be a good fit for.

If you’re considering a Boston getaway or adding a few days here before or after another trip, the W Boston is one upscale option to keep in mind.

Solo travelers — this may be one of the best times to look at a luxury cruise.

One of the biggest frustrations with cruising solo is the single supplement. In some cases, you can end up paying almost the same as two people.

But right now, several luxury river and ocean cruise lines are offering reduced — and in some cases waived — solo supplements on select sailings.

A few worth watching:

✨ AmaWaterways — waived single supplements on select 2027 European river cruises, plus reduced supplements on select Europe, Colombia and Asia sailings.

✨ Uniworld — waived single supplements on select 2026 river cruise departures and stateroom categories.

The key is that these offers vary by sailing, date and accommodation category, so the best value is usually found by comparing specific itineraries rather than just choosing a cruise line.

Planning a few days in Tokyo after your cruise?

I’m doing exactly that — and one of the choices I made was to arrange a private tour so I can experience the city at a more relaxed pace and avoid some of the busiest areas when possible.

Tokyo is huge, exciting, and full of places worth seeing, but that can also make it easy to feel rushed. A private tour gives you more flexibility with timing, stops, photos, and the places you want to prioritize.

For me, the goal isn’t to fit in as much as possible. It’s to actually enjoy the experience.

Exploring Amalfi was one of those moments that reminded me why I love experiencing destinations from the water. 🇮🇹✨

Arriving as part of a small-ship Mediterranean journey gave me a completely different perspective — beautiful coastal views, easy access ashore, and time to actually enjoy the destination.

For travelers who want the Mediterranean without the feel of a large ship, small-ship cruising can be such a special way to do it.

What does a luxury expedition suite really look like? 👀🛳️

This was my balcony suite aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages on my Mediterranean expedition, which began in Athens.

Having the chance to experience the suite in person gave me a much better feel for the space, the comfort, and the overall onboard experience than photos alone ever could.

Atlas Ocean Voyages is an all-suite experience, and I loved having a private balcony and a comfortable place to come back to after a full day of exploring.

This is one of the reasons I value experiencing ships firsthand — it helps me better understand which cruise experience is the right fit for each traveler.

Cruising Japan? A little advance planning can make a big difference. 🇯🇵

A few things to think about before you go:

• Check your passport and entry requirements. For U.S. travelers, no visa is required for a tourist stay under 90 days, but requirements vary by nationality.

• Complete Visit Japan Web before arrival.

• Book important shore excursions early.

• If you’re touring independently, check the port location and transportation time.

• Pack for comfort and flexibility. Lightweight layers work well for changing temperatures, and comfortable walking shoes are essential for long sightseeing days, stations, stairs, and uneven surfaces.

• Plan for some yen and leave flexibility for September weather.

My shore excursions are already booked, along with a private tour in Tokyo. Now I’m looking forward to seeing firsthand which planning choices make the biggest difference.
