The Pacific Seacraft 37 (aka Crealock 37) is legendary for her design and offshore cruising performance. She is a beautiful sailing ship that has excellent handling characteristics on all points of sail. "When setting out to design the Pacific Seacraft 37, I [W.I.B. "Bill" Crealock] had the luxury of doing it for myself without obligation to builder or dealer. I did not have to pay homage to inter

iors festooned with bunks, or revered classic features, or long waterlines or short, or distorted ends." Crealock was one of the few naval architects who could draw from the personal experience of 8 years of blue water cruising.

The search for sunken pirate gold may wait until after hurricane season. Ben Miller's crew Awlgripped Rhapsody's exterior, installed a new hot water heater, and painted her engine, among other things. Russell Legg replaced her damaged teak caprails. My gig ended so DIY reversion will take longer. On the agenda: Mark Craven was selected to replace Rhapsody's headliner. Ann Waters is tentatively scheduled re-varnish her interior. The watermaker, galley water pump, accumulator, and new cold box refrigerator are partially installed. The new air conditioner is almost ready. I will probably race her 2018 and look for pirate gold later.

It's New Year's Eve 2017/8 and Houston is on the edge of an Arctic Blast. Ben Miller of BM Boatworks hopes warmer weather allows application soon of the deck's non-skid, the last remaining exterior painting task, and splashing Rhapsody before re-installing her newly painted mast, the new teak cap rails, and odds and ends. Yard fees are eating me alive.

A soon-to-be-retired couple asked me over Thanksgiving what it is to search the world for the perfect tiki bar, why I engage in such behavior, and what, exactly, is a perfect tiki bar? I deftly employed the Socratic Method.

I gave up on DIY and hired Ben Miller Boatworks to paint Rhapsody - spars, deck and hull. His crew can do it better and faster, so I'll have to continue gigging a little longer doing what I do better and faster.

Longterm plan: sail to Cuba and Caribbean 2018 looking for sunken pirate gold. Sail to Mediterranean to retrace Ullysses 2019. Sail thru the Northwest Passage and around Cape Horn to circumnavigate Western Hemisphere with an expedition to Antarctica 2022. Am short on time. Must go now.

From Sailing and Cruising Cuba forum:

A letter from the Commodore of the club Nautico in Havana…Jose M Dias Escrich

Dear friends of the international nautical community,
It pleases me very much to thank you very much for your concern about the passing of hurricane Irma along our country. We inform you that this Monday we began our work in our Yacht Club, after more than a week without electricity that kept without communication with all of you.
Thanks to our preparedness to face such a devastating hurricane, the headquarters of our Yacht Club did not suffer serious damages. During this past week we worked very hard to leave the headquarters of HIYC of Cuba ready to welcome its members and guests.
No vessel was harmed at Marina Hemingway. That proves the conditions of this marina as a shelter for boats in case of hurricanes and storms.
Our entire country suffered the consequences of this devastating hurricane that left the entire island without electricity during some days.
For our part, we are very concerned about the damages our friends may have suffered in Caribbean islands and the South of Florida.
My best Greetings,

Commodore Escrich

Rhapsody rode out the storm and damage to the marina was minimal. One marina employee's Jeep flooded and one old boat sank. They are picking up debris. Water receded and roads are mostly open.
