Sedona’s night sky is great to photograph. Whether I’m in my backyard or guiding an astrophotography tour, there’s nothing quite like being out on a clear, dark night. It’s always magical and amazing to see how many stars cameras and smartphones capture. The Milky Way galactic center is visible over the next five months, so my camera batteries are charged and my flashlights are ready. Good thing I’m a night owl!

I was thrilled to spot this Lesser Goldfinch almost hidden among these vibrant matching agave blossoms in Sedona. Nature's color coordination at its finest! Birds and bees pollinate these flowers to ensure new plants can continue to thrive.

Today is the last day of International Dark Sky Week, which ran from April 13 through 19. I’m lucky to live in Sedona, which is a Dark Sky community that restricts outdoor lighting to help people see and photograph the wonders in the skies above. Sometimes Sedona‘s vivid night sky is as beautiful as our iconic red rocks. I took this photo of the Milky Way (far left) behind Seven Sacred Pools near the end of Milky Way season, as a full moon was rising just after sunset.

I happily share my passion for Sedona‘s stunning night skies with guests and locals through private astrophotography and stargazing tours. It’s always great to see people's reactions when they discover how many stars their phones and cameras actually capture.

If you would like to find out about these excursions, send me a direct message along with the dates of your visit, if known, so I can check availability. Off-road Jeep tours are conducted under USFS license.

One of my favorite things about living in Sedona is spending time under our spectacular night skies capturing their beauty. As an International Dark Sky Community, Sedona restricts outdoor lighting, which helps us to see and photograph the twinkling wonders overhead. With Milky Way season upon us, I'm happily sharing my passion through more and more astrophotography and stargazing tours.

International Dark Sky Week runs April 13 through 19. I kicked things off with a special event at the Enchantment ResortI where I taught guests how to photograph Sedona's vivid night sky using just their smartphones, and shared my favorite apps for locating and identifying stars and planets. It was great to see people's reactions when they discovered how many stars their phones could actually capture!

If you would like to join one of my Sedona nighttime tours where I can do what I did at this special event and more, send me a direct message and I'll be happy to send details. Also, include the dates of your visit so I can check availability. Off-road Jeep tours are conducted under USFS license.

Thanks Arizona Highways Magazine for featuring my photo in your falling snow gallery. I took this picture on one of those rare occasions when we got enough snow in Sedona that it stuck around for a while.
