Sedona is a different place late at night when the sky is clear and sparkling with stars and planets. What is overhead is as majestic as the red rocks are during the day. I took this picture of the Milky Way over Courthouse Butte a few nights ago with my iPhone while guiding a private tour for a visitor from New York. It’s incredible how well smartphones can capture the night sky when you know the right settings to use. We lost count of how many times we said “Amazing!” as we opened successful photos. Each one felt like unwrapping a little piece of magic.

When we first headed out around 5:30 to explore some vortexes, it was exceedingly hot. Thankfully, by the time we reached this spot, the air had cooled to a pleasant temperature, making it a perfect night for stargazing and photography. I normally do astrophotography with my professional camera, but I used my iPhone instead so I could teach her how to shoot the night sky with hers for the very first time. We sat in awe enjoying the experience as the stars and the Milky Way danced across the sky before the moon rose and softened their glow. It was so mesmerizing and fun that it was hard to leave.

This photo of me between two blooming agaves was taken while I was guiding a private Sedona Jeep tour in May. For perspective, I am 5 feet tall, and these beauties were towering over me. Moments like this are why I love sharing Sedona’s wonders with visitors.

Agave flower stalks stretch toward the sun at an incredible pace. They can grow as much as 6 to 12 inches a day and reach heights up to 30 feet. They are often called "century plants" because they bloom only once in their lifetime, usually between 10 and 30 years of age. As the tall stalk emerges, the base of the plant dies off. Nature takes over from there, with wind, birds, and bees spreading seeds to ensure new plants continue to grow across the desert landscape.

Sedona’s night sky is great to photograph. Whether I’m in my backyard or guiding an astrophotography tour, there’s nothing quite like being out on a clear, dark night. It’s always magical and amazing to see how many stars cameras and smartphones capture. The Milky Way galactic center is visible over the next five months, so my camera batteries are charged and my flashlights are ready. Good thing I’m a night owl!

I was thrilled to spot this Lesser Goldfinch almost hidden among these vibrant matching agave blossoms in Sedona. Nature's color coordination at its finest! Birds and bees pollinate these flowers to ensure new plants can continue to thrive.
