Statement from Sheriff Michael R. Hodges, Jr.


Yesterday, three Deputies with the Sevier County Sheriff's Office were involved in a deadly force encounter while attempting to serve a warrant at a local hotel in Pigeon Forge.

During that encounter, the suspect presented an immediate deadly threat by pointing a firearm at our Deputies. In response, our Deputies used deadly force to protect their own lives and the lives of others. The suspect died as a result of the encounter.

Let this serve as a clear message: If you choose to threaten our Deputies, our citizens, or our visitors with deadly force, our Deputies will use every lawful means necessary to stop that threat.

As Sheriff, I will always stand behind our Deputies who are forced to make split-second decisions to protect themselves and others from imminent danger. The men and women of this office do not seek violence; we seek to protect life. But when confronted with a deadly threat, our Deputies are highly trained, well-equipped, and prepared to act decisively to end that threat.

I am profoundly grateful that all three of our Deputies returned home safely to their families. We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and ask that everyone affected by this incident remain in your thoughts and prayers.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into this incident, and the Sevier County Sheriff's Office will fully cooperate throughout that process.
