So much to share from our first day in Yosemite, but this deserves its own post! 🐻
We were hiking to Mirror Lake when we came face to face with a bear.
My husband usually leads on hikes, but my youngest had gotten ahead of us. My middle was just in front of me, I had my other twin beside me, and my husband and oldest were behind.
My youngest turned around and said, "Mama, there's a bear." She's a jokester, so I laughed and said, "Oh no there isn't," as I walked up to see for myself.
There absolutely was, and he was walking straight toward us. Thankfully, he wasn't charging; he was just sauntering down the trail like he owned it.
My youngest had already backed up toward her older sister by the time I realized what we were dealing with. My other twin fell, so I scooped her up, grabbed my middle daughter by her overall straps, and started backing up. She lost a shoe in the process, but at that the least of our concerns.
My husband stepped in front of us while I gathered the girls against a boulder so we were between them and the bear. Through it all, the girls stayed so calm, and I could not be more proud of them.
The bear walked right past us, paused to sniff in our direction, and then continued on his way. Thank. The. Lord.
After a few minutes to settle our nerves, we retrieved the missing shoe and continued down the trail.
Since he passed so close to us, I noticed he had a tag marked "11." Later, I searched "Yosemite Bear 11" and found the photo below from a recent sighting. He is definitely not a small bear. 😳
Tonight, I'm feeling so incredibly thankful that what could have been a tragic story became just an unforgettable one. This experience was a great reminder that you can never, ever let your guard down in the wilderness.
And now we have one incredible Yosemite story that we’ll never forget! And I may have a few more gray hairs. 🤣🤣
