In the winter of 1925, the town of Nome faced a deadly Diphtheria outbreak with no lifesaving serum available. With airplanes grounded by brutal winter storms, the only solution was a relay of sled dog teams racing across the Iditarod Trail. Over 20 mushers and about 150 dogs carried the serum nearly 700 miles in just five and a half days. Led by famous dogs like Balto and Togo, the teams saved the town—one of the most heroic chapters in sled dog history. 🐕❄️💉

This is just one of the many incredible feats of human-sled dog teamwork The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race commemorates. Join us in cheering on the sled dogs of the Iditarod as they race to Nome in the 2026 Iditarod. 🐕❄️

Want to learn more about the 1925 Diphtheria outbreak? Disney’s Togo is a heartwarming, family-friendly film. For a deeper dive into this incredible story of courage, endurance, and human reliance on sled dogs in the arctic read The Cruelest Miles.

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was born from the history of Alaska’s gold rush trails. In the early 1900s, miners depended on sled dogs to haul freight, mail, and gold across hundreds of miles of winter trail. Those same routes became the Iditarod Trail. When the race began in 1973, it was created to celebrate that historic trail and honor the incredible sled dogs who powered Alaska’s frontier and kept its remote communities connected. 🐕❄️

Colorado Dog Sledding’s founder, Dallas Seavey’s grandfather, Dan Seavey, competed in that first Iditarod in 1973 and began a family legacy. Dan and his descendants have competed in over 50 Iditarod races and have been crowned champion 9 times!

The Iditarod 2026 starts today! Join us in cheering on the mushers and sled dogs as they em-BARK (sorry, couldn’t help myself) on this epic adventure known as The Last Great Race!

For thousands of years, humans and sled dogs have shared a partnership that helped make life possible in the Arctic. Archaeological evidence suggests humans and sled dogs have been working together for at least 9,000 years. In a land of deep snow, vast distances, and extreme cold, huskies provided transportation, helped hunt, carried supplies, and offered warmth, comfort, and protection. This bond wasn’t just practical—it was essential. Together, humans and sled dogs built a relationship of trust and teamwork that allowed Arctic cultures to survive and thrive. 🐾❄️

This tradition lives on, in part through the Iditarod trail Sled Dog Race (The Iditarod), which begins tomorrow. Join us in cheering on these amazing canine athletes and celebrating humankind’s best friend. The dog!

Want to feel the thrill of mushing yourself? Join us for a sled dog tour and experience a tradition that built the North.

What we do at Colorado Dog Sledding isn’t just an activity. It’s a continuation of tradition - experienced privately.

Long before snowmobiles and highways, sled dogs were how people moved through winter. They carried mail, medicine, and explorers across vast Arctic landscapes. What began as survival became culture. And that culture still runs through every team you see today.

No crowds. No rush. Just you, your guide, and the dogs.

You’ll learn their names. Their roles. Their stories. And you’ll capture photographs that feel as timeless as the tradition itself.

This a private moment inside a living heritage.

❄️ Tradition you can feel.
🐾 Legacy you experience up close.
📸 Images that don’t need exaggeration.
