Necessity is the Mother of Invention… and Sometimes, a Duck Boat

Meet Mike—a nice fellow from Featherbed Road, just a stone’s throw from Apple Island. Recently, Mike did something most of us only dream about: he bought Cedar Island. Yup, the whole thing.

Cedar Island is the first island north of the causeway on the inner sea, easily spotted from your car as you cruise across the causeway. Naturally, Mike was thrilled. But then came the question:

How do you get a whole party of family and friends from your house to your private island and back again?

The standard answer? A couple of pontoon boats and a big passenger van to shuttle folks down to the marina.

But Mike doesn’t live in the land of “standard.” If you’re clever enough to buy your own island, you probably think a little differently. And Mike did.

“Eureka!” he said. “A Duck Boat!”

And just like that, the plan was hatched. Mike loads up his guests—about 25 at a time—right at his house. They roll down the road in a World War II-era amphibious vehicle, splash down the ramp at Apple Island Marina, and cruise across the inner sea to Cedar Island.

When the party’s over? He simply reverses the route: sails back to the marina, drives up the ramp, and heads home.

Simple. Brilliant. Unforgettable.

Thanks to Mike, we now get to witness a piece of history in motion—a Boston Harbor Duck Boat making waves on our beloved lake.

The lake added a little extra magic to our Tuesday tour—two bald eagles were just hanging out on the beach, calm as can be.
They graced us with their quiet majesty, and after about 20 minutes, one soared off to the north, the other to the south. It was simply beautiful.

Hard to believe these majestic birds were listed as endangered in 1987. And in 2003, Vermont was the ONLY state in the lower 48 without a single breeding pair! Thanks to the incredible work of VT Fish & Wildlife, we now have at least 45 pairs nesting across the state.

I’ve been on the water a lot this season, and it’s no longer rare to see a bald eagle gliding overhead. Every sighting still feels like a gift. Just magical.

I’d like you to meet my First Mate, Andrew—a finer mate has never stepped aboard a vessel.

He lives just a quarter mile from our dock, right here on the island, and has been on the water since he was a wee boy. He captains his parents’ pontoon, owns his own bass boat, and knows these waters like the back of his hand. He’s an expert fisherman, a skilled boatman, and has already completed his hours and passed all his exams for his Captain’s License—just waiting on the official papers from the U.S. Coast Guard.

But beyond the credentials, Andrew is simply a good soul. Passengers love him. He’s mentioned in glowing reviews, especially for his kindness, and ability to connect with folks from all walks of life—from San Diego to Massachusetts, Colorado to Florida, and everywhere in between. He’s especially wonderful with children, and he’s the kind of person who makes everyone feel welcome aboard.

One lovely family from South Carolina even invited him to stay at their home in Hilton Head while he’s at school. That tells you something.

Andrew is entering his senior year at Clemson University, where he’s been on the Dean’s List since he first docked there, maintaining a 3.8 GPA while a member of on his beloved Clemson Tigers Baseball team. He’ll soon be heading back to campus, and while I’m proud of him, I’ll miss him dearly.

A woman at my church recently expressed concern that today’s young people might lose their moral compass in this political climate. Well ma’am, I can assure you—Andrew’s compass points true. It’s set to kindness, integrity, and a meaningful life.

A fine man. A fine First Mate. And a finer friend. And proof that the future will be in good hands!

Tale of the Lost Red Boat

ONCE UPON A TIME, a brave little boy named Hudson—along with his mom, dad, little brother, and their wimpy but loyal dog Maui—set off on a magical boat tour. Maui adored the boat (a true sea dog at heart), but when it came to walking on docks? Total terror! A certified scaredy-cat in a dog’s body — they all set sail from the Kingdom of Connecticut to a magical tour of Lake Champlain.

Hudson loved being on the boat, gazing at the majestic mountains, watching birdies soar and settle on the shimmering lake, and mesmerized by the clear, warm water rushing by. But his favorite part? Discovering the secret island where only fairies and elves are said to live.

When Hudson heard tales of Champ, our legendary lake monster, he was determined to see him. So Captain Scotty took the crew to an enchanted cove where Champ is known to frolic and hide. Though Champ remained elusive, the adventure continued.

The family decided to go swimming, so First Mate Andrew dropped anchor. They splashed in the water, played near the shore, and even searched for ancient Indian arrowheads.
Back on board, Mom and Dad relaxed while Hudson and his brother played with remote control boats on the deck of the Tankful II. Hudson captained his own red boat, sailing in circles and gleefully crashing into his brother’s blue one. But then—it happened.

The red boat lost power and drifted away, carried by the wind.

Hudson was heartbroken. He thought it was his fault the batteries had died. Everyone tried to console him—even Maui, who licked a tear as it rolled down Hudson’s cheek. But Hudson remained very sad.

So we sprang into action. All hands on deck! We weighed anchor and searched up and down the shoreline. Sadly no sign of the red boat. Hudson was sure it was lost forever… until the magic of the lake revealed itself.

Just as we were about to give up, lo and behold—a beautiful mermaid with a shimmering yellow tail appeared around the point, holding Hudson’s red boat in her hands.

“Are you looking for this?” she asked.
We all shouted, “YES!” And Hudson’s face lit up with joy.
The beautiful mermaid had found his red boat. All was well again.

To this day, we don’t know if Champ was watching from the depths, summoning his mermaid friend with the yellow tail to lend a hand. But one thing’s for sure—Lake Champlain holds more magic than us grown-ups will ever know.

Hudson knows, though.

I’ve been remiss not posting as frequently as I intended—but fortunately, a steady trickle of bookings these past few weeks has kept me and my trusty First Mate Andrew busy on the water. Landlubber duties have crept in too, including making replacement window boxes for my wife. **Captain Scotty’s Tip: Painted, untreated window boxes last exactly eight years and four months. Then, on cue at the end of July, they simultaneously disintegrate and spark a household horticulture emergency.

We’ve had guests from Colorado, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Connecticut just in the past week or so. But today, we had the pleasure of welcoming a lovely family of six from Ohio—counting Atlas, a Burmese Mountain Dog. Thank God he was four-months old … any bigger and we might have been touring from the lakebed!

It was windier and cooler than usual, so after cruising the southern islands, we slipped into our favorite downwind cove, anchored, and fished. Turns out the fish love warm, calm, sheltered water as much as we do. We caught fish after fish and stayed there until we headed home with the setting sun. Everyone except Atlas caught a fish— he licked them.

Tomorrow: the tale of “The Little Red Boat That Sailed Away.”

An Absolutely Perfect Day (with a dramatic twist)

Swimming, fishing and dinner tour, family of five.

What a day we had! We set sail at 2:00 PM from Apple Island Marina, just as the mercury hit a blistering 100°—a record high! A steady 10mph breeze whispered across the lake, which gracefully faded to a near dead calm by sunset. Pretty much perfect.

Even better, I got to share it with a picture-perfect family of five—including three spectacularly cool kids, ages 11 to 15, who quickly turned this from a tour into a team adventure. Noah was at the helm before I could say “starboard,” and his sister Sammy, a natural first mate, took the reins like she’d been born on deck.

We toured among the islands, fished for perch with optimism and mild competitiveness (Noah won!), and cooled off with a swim in my favorite secret cove—shared, of course, with Champ, Lake Champlain’s most mysterious (and photogenic) resident. The water was crystal clear. John, the dad, looked around in awe and declared, “This is like the Bahamas.” I had to gently correct him—“no, this is better than the Bahamas.”

We glided through the Gut, out onto the broad lake, and eventually dropped anchor at Bravo Zulu for a well-earned dinner. On the way home, we trolled for salmon as the sun set below the horizon in a blaze of color.

And that was almost the end…

As Meg (the mom) was debarking the boat, she turned to me and said what a perfect day it had been—and then… KER-PLUNK! Yup, her cell phone slipped right into the water.

Time stood still. Conversations halted. The stars themselves seemed to gasp — along with me! We had gone a wee bit over our four-hour tour, and now it was 9:30 p.m. The docks were quiet, empty, and dark. Many would have declared the day’s perfection officially sunk, I sure did. But not this crew.

Without a word, John—husband, father, hero—kicked off his shoes and dove in like he was Aquaman. For a long moment, we all stared into the pitch-black water. Then, a miracle: John in chest-deep water, feeling around for five suspenseful minutes—and lo and behold, he found the phone! And, by some sprinkle of magic, it still worked!!!

But of course it did. This is the Champlain Islands MAGICAL Boat Tours, after all.

What a day indeed.

YOU’RE INVITED TO THE GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION!

Champlain Islands Magical Boat Tours is officially anchoring its world headquarters at—wait for it— Arbor Farm Market in South Hero, Vermont!

Because when you think “boat tours,” obviously your next thought is “farm stand.” But hey, it makes perfect sense when you consider that Arbor Farm Market is enchanting--a perfect fit for my magical boat tours.

And at the helm of this charming chaos is Alisha — my sassy, exasperating, indomitable half-ass friend who owns the place. Thanks to my impeccable persuasion skills, she agreed to host this celebration (talked her into it), which means you’ll get to know her —immediately — whether you like it or not.

In fact, here she is now, alongside Captain Scotty, filming a promotional video for this momentous occasion.

More coherent details will be posted soon… allegedly.
