Necessity is the Mother of Invention… and Sometimes, a Duck Boat
Meet Mike—a nice fellow from Featherbed Road, just a stone’s throw from Apple Island. Recently, Mike did something most of us only dream about: he bought Cedar Island. Yup, the whole thing.
Cedar Island is the first island north of the causeway on the inner sea, easily spotted from your car as you cruise across the causeway. Naturally, Mike was thrilled. But then came the question:
How do you get a whole party of family and friends from your house to your private island and back again?
The standard answer? A couple of pontoon boats and a big passenger van to shuttle folks down to the marina.
But Mike doesn’t live in the land of “standard.” If you’re clever enough to buy your own island, you probably think a little differently. And Mike did.
“Eureka!” he said. “A Duck Boat!”
And just like that, the plan was hatched. Mike loads up his guests—about 25 at a time—right at his house. They roll down the road in a World War II-era amphibious vehicle, splash down the ramp at Apple Island Marina, and cruise across the inner sea to Cedar Island.
When the party’s over? He simply reverses the route: sails back to the marina, drives up the ramp, and heads home.
Simple. Brilliant. Unforgettable.
Thanks to Mike, we now get to witness a piece of history in motion—a Boston Harbor Duck Boat making waves on our beloved lake.
