Villa San Michele has just reopened after an 18-month closure for renovations. Located in the hills with lofty views of Florence, the hotel used to be a 15th century monastery. The School of Michelangelo worked on the building and in the woodlands of the grounds, Leonardo da Vinci first tried to fly. The place is steeped in history. The suites have luxurious marble and incredible built-in closets. There is a Spa by Guerlain and a rooftop terrace with pool. Tapestries hang on the walls and the beautiful gardens have many cosy spaces to enjoy the view, or read a book. The Team is attentive and very friendly. This is a “retreat”. If you wanted to to escape the busy streets of Florence but still remain just about 20 minutes away from the city, the Hotel’s courtesy shuttle can get you to and from quickly.

Bern, the capital of Switzerland and once home to Albert Einstein. Namesake bears, fountains, and historic buildings can be found in the Old Town which is denoted a UNESCO Heritage Site. We did a private tour of the medieval Zytglogge Clock Tower which was fascinating. We learned about the astronomical clock and the precise mechanisms responsible for all the moving figures. Highly recommended. Also, the climb to the top of the tower offers a stunning panoramic view of the city.

Sailed last week on the beautiful Explorer 1 launched in 2023. 461 suites with sun terraces, 5 pools, 6 restaurants (don’t miss Sakura), spa with steam room and salt cave. Delicious food and beverage options and I loved the Emporium Marketplace where the staff are the only ones serving the food, and the fresh juice bar. The king size bed is incredibly comfortable and the mini bars are stocked according to the guests’ preferences - alcoholic and nonalcoholic options. Really appreciated the refillable water bottles in the cabin for each guest, and the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer (have not seen this in a hotel room or a cruise cabin before). The ship never felt overcrowded and there are many cool and quiet spaces for passengers to relax. The complimentary high speed WiFi worked for me even while on FaceTime in the elevators. Put this one on your cruise list!
