It’s almost our favorite time of year in Florida! November 15th marks the official start of Florida manatee season, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome these gentle giants back to the warmer waters of the Weeki Wachee River! 🙌🏼🌿

As temperatures begin to drop in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida manatees seek out warmer waters, including the spring-fed waterways of Weeki Wachee, where the water stays a refreshing 72°F year-round!

It’s not unusual to see both dolphins and manatees sharing the same water but rarely do we capture them all together in one video!

Manatees are slow-moving herbivores that graze on aquatic plants, while dolphins are active predators often moving through to hunt fish, two very different lifestyles crossing paths in the same river system.

Seeing both on one paddle is a pretty great reminder of how diverse and alive these waterways are. We keep our distance, stay quiet, and let them do their thing which is when the best moments happen. 🌊🚣‍♀️✨

🐊 Now THAT is a wild Florida paddle after dark!

We floated past this good sized alligator and snapping turtle while out on our Sunset Clear Kayak Eco Tour on the Weeki Wachee River and gave them exactly what every wild animal needs: plenty of space. 🙌🏼

One of the most important parts of responsible ecotourism is remembering that when we paddle these waterways, we are visitors in their home. Wildlife doesn’t need us to approach, interact, feed, touch, or change what they’re doing for us to have an incredible encounter.

We keep wildlife wild and keep ourselves safe by slowing down, observing from a respectful distance, and allowing animals to decide where they go and what they do. 🌿🐊

Sometimes the best wildlife encounter is simply getting to quietly witness a wild animal being wild.

And when that happens during a Weeki Wachee sunset? Pretty hard to beat. 🌅💚
