Some places don’t feel real, and Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is at the top of that list.

This is the largest salt flat on Earth, covering roughly 4,000 square miles at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level in the Andes. It began as a collection of ancient lakes that dried up thousands of years ago and left behind a thick crust of salt that stretches to the horizon. The surface is so flat that satellites use it to calibrate their instruments!

The best part is what happens in the rainy season, usually December through March. A thin layer of water covers the salt and turns the whole flat into a mirror, so the sky reflects in every direction and the horizon disappears.

Ready to set sail?

At the end of August, we took a small group to Croatia and chartered a yacht for a week. It was an incredible experience to be on the water, set sail each day, and explore new cities and ports. We ate and drank our way through the island at its many restaurants and wineries, and made many stops along the way to swim and just watch the sunset.

If you guessed Norway, you are correct!

Fjords are valleys carved by glaciers during the ice ages, then the sea flooded them once the ice melted. Norway has over 1,000 fjords.

The Sognefjord alone runs over 125 miles inland and drops more than 4,000 feet deep, and both the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

One of the best ways to see them is from the water, as you can take in all the incredible scenery while breathing in the fresh air.
