A little footprint, a little imagination, and a few treasures from the sea! 🧜‍♀️

My granddaughter’s 7-month-old footprint got a Florida makeover! I turned it into a mermaid tail and added shells and shark teeth I found to make this one-of-a-kind keepsake celebrating her first trip to Florida.

Who knew a footprint could make such a splash? 🌊

Every beachcombing adventure along Florida’s Gulf Coast brings a little mystery! South of Venice, I’ve been finding an amazing variety of shark teeth, along with stingray barbs and pufferfish mouth plates.

Look closely at the colors! Some are black, others deep brown, charcoal gray, or even tan. But did you know those colors can offer clues about their history?

Fossil shark teeth absorb minerals from the sediments where they’ve been buried. Iron, manganese, and other elements can create those beautiful dark shades. Lighter brown and tan colors reflect different mineral conditions.

But here’s the fascinating part: darker doesn’t necessarily mean older! The color tells us more about the conditions in which a specimen was buried than its exact age. Some shark teeth found along Florida’s coast are millions of years old, remnants of sharks that swam these waters long before humans existed.

Stingray barbs and pufferfish mouth plates add another layer of intrigue. These are made of different materials than shark teeth, and their age can’t be determined simply by their color.

And then there’s the possibility of finding a worn fragment of a megalodon tooth—or even a recognizable tooth from this prehistoric giant!

I love that every little discovery has a story, even when we don’t know the whole story. A handful of beach treasures can connect us to an ocean that has been changing for millions of years.

One of my favorite travel traditions is collecting baseball caps wherever I go! They’re such an easy, fun, and practical souvenir to bring home. They don’t take up much room in a suitcase, and every time I wear one, I’m reminded of the adventures, places, and memories from the trip where I found it.

I also love collecting neck gaiters. They’re surprisingly versatile! Scrunch one up and wear it as a headband to keep your hair in place, pull it around your neck on a chilly day, or use it as a stylish extra layer when the weather changes.

Two simple, affordable souvenirs that are useful long after the trip is over! I welcome these items to my collection!

Out for a sunset, beach walk, I spot a little shell with a heart cut right out of it, and my first thought is, “I have to make a video and share this with my friends!”

I guess that’s part of enjoying life’s journey… noticing the little things, finding joy in unexpected places, and taking time to appreciate the moment instead of rushing toward the next destination.

Because the beauty of life isn’t just in the places we go, but in the little discoveries we make along the way.

Here’s to wandering, wondering, and enjoying every moment of the journey!
