Smithwick & Co., LLC is a one-man operation located in the beautiful li

ttle town of Stantonsburg, North Carolina about an hour east of Raleigh. We're a little different than the typical furniture company. I focus on making custom pieces that are a combination of antique, folk art and modern designs. I use wood primarily, but I also like to incorporate metal, glass and recycled items into my designs. This makes my finished products not only sturdy and practical, but visually stimulating and unique. This part of NC has a strong craft and folk art heritage and I strive to keep these traditions alive with my creations. I use traditional methods when constructing furniture. Hand tools, beeswax, oils and other homemade finishes are commonly used. My items are built to last for multiple generations. By the time your typical store-bought piece is ready to be discarded in a landfill, my pieces are just starting to develop a patina that will only get better with time. Here at Smithwick & Co, I also repair and refinish furniture. I am always very careful and respectful to all of the pieces I restore. Attention to detail and communication with the owner is my number one priority when restoring your cherished item. If you have a piece that needs a makeover, please feel free to contact me for a itemized quote.

Another fine day in the studio finishing up a folk art commission and enjoying this beautiful, NC weather. No heaters, air conditioning or fans to worry with… just enjoying the gentle breeze flowing in through my shop windows, carrying the pleasant aromas of spring flowers and last night’s rain.

This piece represents the internal spiritual battle that most humans face daily with their own personal demons such as Fear, Addiction, Frustration, Regret and Chronic Heartache. My purpose was to create something that a person could look at every day to inspire them to fight their demons instead of running away and letting the demons win. The shiny black background of this piece will show your reflection for an interesting perspective.

I’ve started working on a new mixed media project with handmade wooden frames. It’s enjoyable to be able to take a short diversion from my furniture work. The female form I’m sketching here will represent Mother Nature and her bountiful gifts.

I've been working on some large items recently and just completed this French style, Mediterranean dining table. The frame was painted in black over red milk paint and lightly distressed to reveal the red paint underneath. The top was left natural and will darken to a beautiful amber color.

These tables can be shipped anywhere in the continental USA. Click here for more details: www.etsy.com/listing/398167749/mediterranean-dining-table-farmhouse

Flattening a large table top using hand planes offers a great upper-body workout. The aggressive, short plane 'scoops out' the high spots while the longer plane smooths and flattens the surface. Using hand tools will give the table top an organic, handmade look and feel.

It's hard to beat the efficiency and enjoyment of using a razor sharp spokeshave to sculpt wood. Here, I'm smoothing out the rough saw marks left from the bandsaw on this massive table leg.

A promising young artist enjoying her new Art Caddy. For this example, we went with a light-pink for the handle and dividers, while painting the base in antique white. The paint was distressed and waxed for added character and protection.
