Did you know? The Ouachita National Forest was originally called the Arkansas National Forest. Created through an executive order issued by President Theodore Roosevelt on December 18, 1907, the name change came 90 years later. President Calvin Coolidge changed the name of the Arkansas National Forest to the Ouachita National Forest on April 29, 1926.

A few years later, President Herbert Hoover expanded the Ouachita National Forest to include part of eastern Oklahoma on December 3, 1930.

Today, the Ouachita National Forest consists of nearly 1.8 million acres located in twelve Arkansas counties and two Oklahoma counties. It is the largest and oldest national forest in the southern region of the United States.

It's bright and sunny today, but colder temperatures are on their way. Consider doing some tree maintenance this winter. The dormant season is a good time to perform tree maintenance. When the ground is frozen, trees are more easily accessed for inspection and servicing. Frozen ground helps prevent soil compaction. Plus, pruning during the winter months decreases the likeliness for some tree diseases to spread and reduces the chance of snow or ice accumulations to harm the integrity of a tree’s structure.

Here are some guidelines for removing dead wood, but recognizing that individual species may differ is important to remember.
