UPDATE: 7:15 p.m. Monday, both lanes of the highway are now open but travelers are urged to exercise caution as firefighters are still working in the area.
UPDATE: 2:40 p.m. Monday, the highway has reopened to one lane of traffic.
UPDATE, 8:45 pm Sunday: The highway will remain closed overnight between the city and Ironton Park. The cause of the fire, which remains roughly 5 acres in size, is under investigation.

UPDATE: 4:46 pm: U.S. 550 is being closed between the snow gate at Ironton Park and County Road 18 (Engineer Pass). Alternate routes are advised.
The fire is estimated to be between 5 and 8 acres at this time.

ALERT: A fire is actively burning on Red Mountain Pass near the snow shed (near mile marker 88 on U.S. Highway 550). The Ouray Fire Department, the BLM and U.S. Forest Service are on the scene.
