Cooking systems for backcountry groups — which one’s right for you?
🔥 Canister stoves — compact and easy, but temperature-dependent (they struggle in colder temps). Best for smaller groups.
• Jetboil — great for summer, adding boiling water to prepackaged dehydrated meals
• MSR Reactor — better for winter, fast boiling and snow melting
• Pocket Rocket — best in summer when you’re cooking meals in the stove and it’s warmer out.
🔥 MSR WhisperLite (white gas) — best overall for bigger groups. Cooks meals in the pot at any temp, on any expedition, and is the most fuel-efficient option when you’re carrying a lot of fuel.

Bottom line: Canister stoves = smaller groups. White gas stoves = larger groups.

Happy Monday! IFMGA Guide Connor Chilcott with a tech tip on how to stack your rope for smooth multi-pitch transitions. 🧗

– If you’re leading the next pitch, stack the rope in large coils to smaller coils.
– If you’re swapping leads and your partner is leading next, do the opposite: small coils to larger coils.

Stacking the rope in the right order helps it feed smoothly when the next climber takes off without turning your belay transition into a tangled mess.

We have spots available on our 5-Day Mountaineering and Alpine Climbing Course on Sept 17-21 which is our last course of the season. This course is designed for the beginner or intermediate climber who wishes to develop strong fundamental skills in all aspects of snow, rock and glacier climbing.

The Yosemite finish is our preferred way to tuck the extra tail of the rope after tying in. One of its biggest advantages is that it makes your figure eight follow through much easier to untie after it’s been weighted.
