The folklore that has developed around El Tiradito is fascinating, even if we may never know which, if any, of its origin stories are true.
One of the other things that keeps El Tiradito so interesting and special to our community is how dynamic it is. It never looks the same. The ofrendas and recuerdos that are left there keep it in a constant state of transformation. Besides the candles that are regularly put out with the names of the victims of mass-shootings or border-crossing deaths, I have also seen Tonka trucks, TV dinners, rocking chairs, stuffed animals, and family photos.
Today I saw another example of the seemingly random and sometimes strange mementos that are left there.
The print in the photo is called “The Red Umbrella Down by the River” by Allen Stringfellow. It depicts a river baptism in Champaign, Illinois.
No idea who put it there or why. It may be profound or it may be meaningless.
It is perfectly El Tiradito.
