Saguaro cacti seal each cavity with scar tissue called callus within weeks of drilling. This waterproof lining prevents infection while creating a sturdy nest chamber. The same hole that houses an elf owl in spring shelters a wren family by summer. Desert real estate works on a tight rotation schedule. [529jV]

Great news for Arizona’s 4th Nat’l Park!

Great news for Arizona’s 4th Nat’l Park!

A bipartisan bill in Congress is again seeking to redesignate Chiricahua National Monument as a national park, which would make it Arizona’s fourth alongside Saguaro National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park. Legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate by Arizona lawmakers Mark Kelly, Ruben Gallego, and Juan Ciscomani.

Established in 1924, Chiricahua is known as the “Wonderland of Rocks” for its rhyolite pinnacles formed by volcanic ash and lava. The 12,025-acre monument in Cochise County attracts about 60,000 visitors a year and is deeply connected to Apache history. The proposal has support from tribal nations and local leaders, and would require collaboration with tribes to protect cultural and religious sites. If approved, Chiricahua would become the first new national park since 2020.
