This is Frankie. He lives in our backyard and has recently decided he might like to be friends. Sometimes he watches me in the garden and other times, I watch him dig up his acorns. Nothing too exciting. Today, though, there was drama.
We have a lot of birds but he and a brown thrasher clearly have some lore. Words were exchanged. He squawked from a branch and the thrasher yapped back from the fence. For a while. It was a whole thing. Iโ€™m not sure but I think Frankie won. ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ

I wanted to try lunch at The Pink House so I decided to plan afternoon in Claremore to get a feel for the town. You guys gave me a ton of recommendations and I didnโ€™t get to nearly as much as I would have liked but here is what I did have time to do:

The original purpose of the trip was a 1 pm reservation for lunch at The Pink House, Claremore. Itโ€™s on the first floor of the Belvidere Mansion - a three story Victorian home built in 1907. Itโ€™s charming, historical and although the service was unfortunately very slow, everyone was so nice and the food was delicious. Hopefully, that aspect was out of the norm. After lunch, I spent some time looking around the second floor which is the museum area.

So many people recommended various antique shops - which I love. I decided to walk Will Rogers Blvd to see what downtown had to offer. There are so many cute shops! I ended up with a few books and a grapevine woven basket. My favorite shop was The Cranberry Merchant which is where I got the basket.

I spent way more time shopping than anticipated and time got away from me but I wanted to be sure to try the pie at Hammett House Restaurant. I got the coconut and couldnโ€™t finish it. Itโ€™s worth noting all the pies are cream topped. No meringue. That doesnโ€™t bother me but my husband doesnโ€™t like cream pies.

Finally, on the way home, I drove old Route 66 and made a stop by the Blue Whale of Catoosa. Itโ€™s not yet reopened but I pulled over for a few pics. There were others there fishing with kids. Theres no gate on the pond but there is for the parking lot. Itโ€™s set to reopen on May 30.

Unfortunately, thatโ€™s all the time I had so I will have to return another time to try a few other restaurants that yโ€™all recommended as well visit the museums.

Hugh Davis โ€” a zoologist โ€” built the Blue Whale as a surprise anniversary gift for his wife Zelta. He and a friend spent two years welding the frame and applying hand-mixed cement one five-gallon bucket at a time, until it stood 20 feet tall and 80 feet long.

Soon enough, locals started sneaking in to have a little fun with the jolly blue giant prompting Davis to bring in sand, build picnic tables, hire lifeguards, and open it up to the public.

Eventually, it fell into disrepair and shut down until the Catoosa community rallied to restore it in 1997. Since then, the city has purchased the property and the Blue Whale is currently undergoing the final touches of a 2 million dollar renovation complete with a new visitor center.

Itโ€™s set to open May 30.

Ride it while you still can! Itโ€™s so easy to take a day trip or weekend getaway, especially with kiddos.

Once again, the Heartland Flyer is in danger of shutting down. ๐Ÿ˜ข This is a well used means of transportation between OKC and Fort Worth and itโ€™s a shame Texas doesnโ€™t recognize the value.

Need to know how to ride? Link in comments.

Yukonโ€™s Best Flour Mill has been sitting on Main Street in Yukon, Oklahoma since 1902 โ€” and the business came with drama. When the Kroutil brothers bought out their business partner, the Dobry family, in 1933, the Dobrys didnโ€™t go far. They crossed the street and opened a competing flour mill. Same product. Same block. Maximum pettiness. Rivalry ensued.

By that point Yukonโ€™s Best was already the largest flour mill in the entire Southwest โ€” 2,000 barrels of flour a day, shipping to every state and even Amsterdam during WWII. The Dobrys said hold my kolache and opened anyway.

The mill stopped operating in the 1970s, but that iconic neon sign still lights up the Yukon skyline every night on Route 66. You can see it from miles away. Tea or not, itโ€™s a point of local pride.
