Is your passport valid for your next international trip?

Don’t just check whether it will be valid while you’re traveling. Some destinations require your passport to remain valid for up to six months beyond your travel dates, and an airline may deny boarding if it doesn’t meet the requirement.

A few other details travelers often overlook:

• Children’s passports are only valid for five years
• Some countries require one or more blank passport pages
• A damaged passport may not be accepted
• Each destination has its own entry requirements

Before booking an international trip, check everyone’s passport expiration date, especially the kids’. If anyone is getting close to that six-month window, it may be time to renew.

Entry requirements can vary and change, so always confirm the rules for your specific destination.

Planning your first trip to Italy but only have seven days?

I recommend focusing on Rome and Florence rather than trying to squeeze in too many destinations.

Rome: 3–4 nights
Visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona; with time left to wander.

Florence: 3 nights
Explore the historic center, see Michelangelo’s David, admire the Duomo, and enjoy a day trip into the Tuscan countryside.

A short, easy train ride connects the two cities, making this itinerary manageable without spending too much of your vacation in transit.

Italy is best enjoyed at a comfortable pace. You may not see everything on your first visit, but that gives you the perfect reason to return!
