We had a really fun day shooting some of Yellowstone’s more iconic birds, and were able to work on an important skill. How to capture images in less than ideal light.

These pelicans were together mid-day, in direct harsh light, but using their stark white contrast against the mirrored dark water we were able to salvage some images we’re happy with.

The evening light on the Harlequins was a photographers dream. I think the yellow light on the surface of the water makes this image a keeper!

Not a great photo, but a huge accomplishment yesterday. and I headed to the far north country, and were able to find this gorgeous snowy owl, hanging out, right here in Montana.

Not pictured were the ~30 short eared owls, 1 great horned owl, horned larks, snow buntings, Merlin’s, prairie falcons and 3 magpies.

It was a perfect day, to find the perfect swan shot. Thanks for a great day

Somehow, the complete lack of contrast with their backdrop only enhances the beauty of trumpeter swans. With a 5 day winter storm watch starting last night, minimalist wildlife images should be exceptionally abundant in the coming days. My advice: find the swans and wait for compelling poses.

These tiny hunters have been entertaining locals, visitors and photographers all winter. Like Christmas ornaments with attitudes I think they deserve all the attention. Keep your eyes on the tree tops, and averted from their glare.

One is tiny, mighty, and flighty. Darting through the canopy, usually only revealing itself when it perches against a skyline, betrayed by its silhouette.

The other is a wizard of the forest, regal but secretive, and a master of invisibility.
