The glass I’m standing on in the core of the Rundetaarn has a story to tell. In 1880 in Copenhagen, a 12-year-old choir boy named August Nielsen suddenly disappeared without a trace. Dodging the priest’s sermon, he and a friend had secretly played hide-and-seek in the magnificent tower next to the church instead. August found the perfect hiding spot in the caretaker’s dark quarters, backed in quietly, and fell 82 feet from the only opening into the hollow core! And his friend had no idea where he had hidden! After a worrisome police search, August was finally found by his father 20 hours later. Police forbade the desperate father from attempting the perilous climb down, and eventually masons were enlisted to cut a hole at the bottom of the tower to rescue him. Thankfully he survived with only scrapes and loose teeth. Now, when you stand inside the hollow core, you can see the opening above your head, where young “Rundetårn August” fell.

Big changes are coming for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. It will begin and end with our focus away from Earth—from July 1969 on the moon to an other-planetary home in the future! I’m usually excited about attraction updates, but I’ll be honest—this one feels bittersweet. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the new attraction, but I’m also going to miss all the scenes I knew by heart. What do you think?
