The now-ghost town of Auraria, Georgia was the scene of America’s first major gold rush in 1828. It quickly grew into a thriving mining town with over 1,000 residents, dozens of saloons and hotels, and even plans for a U.S. mint. Named after “aurum,” the Latin word for gold, Auraria briefly rivaled nearby Dahlonega...until Dahlonega became the county seat and the 1848 California Gold Rush lured miners west. Today, you can still visit and see Woody’s Store, a weathered 1800s building, along with old stone chimneys, cabin ruins, and mining relics. While the buildings are off-limits, viewing them is a must. One of Denver, Colorado's founders even named part of that city “Auraria” in tribute to his hometown.
